Cheap rubber dome key caps fit onto my MX Cherry keys
« on: Sun, 27 May 2012, 03:30:01 »
I took another look at the $5 keyboard I needed to press enter once (to boot an install of W7). It is just some cheapish rubber dome but.....

Those cheap rubber dome key caps kit on my MX board!!!! The pictures right now are just the 26 letter keys, but I did put a lot more of the white keys on my board (number pad, number row, F keys, insert, home....). Plus since I'm lazy, I didn't put any of the rubber gaskets on these new keys, it felts somewhat different and definitely more loud but I'm diggin' it.

Plus the keycaps are pretty good looking (they are ABS but feel like PBT since they are a bit rougher than my ABS keycaps that came with my WASD)

They are even doubleshots too. Looks like SP keys, should be relatively easy to find some matching 1.25 keys for bottom row to finish set.

The model number is 2189013-XX-XXX

BTW what is a "SP key"? I would like liked to use the modifiers like control and alt but they didn't have the points for the stabilizers and they were bigger than what's on my board right now (since there is no windows key)

"Looks like SP keys" = "those keycaps might have been made by Signature Plastics" (company that makes a lot of the doubleshots for group buys, and also made the original caps for Wyse boards among others)
Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)

ALPS.

Are you saying that the old keyboard uses Alps switches?

There was a Wyse moogle buy that might sort you out if anyone wants to sell you an extra they ordered. Otherwise there may be some people that have some of the SP assorted crapbag keys that could help you piece something together for a matching or near matching set.

Those don't look like Wyse colors to me, but what do I know.  (I need a Wyse moogle as well, was on hiatus while that whole thing went down...  pout)

Well no those are grey legend it looks like, but the font would match and grey and navy wouldn't look bad together (IMO).

Actually I'm pretty happy how it is, but if I do order some more keys, I might have to copy the color schemes (white inner keys with light gray outer keys, alternating F key colors.... )

Ahh... the Anykey. I have one here right next to me on the floor. Damn fine doubleshot caps. I'm currently using them along with a piece of cardboard and some tape to markup my custom keyboard layout.

EDIT: And is it me, or are ponies getting more popular on GH? Hmm. No complaints here, time to break out the old vectors.

I don't think that's an anykey in OPs picture. Besides layout and programming features they might have the same switches/caps, not sure. Are they all Maxi Switch?

Anykey looked more like this IIRC

Found a picture of an anykey, from the geekhack classified, showing switch and cap.
They look essentially the same as those in OPs pictures.

Yup, I've already looked into this keyboard a bit. It's not an Anykey and doesn't have the PCB/Chip used by the Anykey (sometimes they used the same PCB/chip but just disabled features) so the keyboard I have really isn't worth anything (compared to the Anykey)

Just wonder, are the key caps worth anything significant? or are they just another cheap set of ABS DS?

You might get up to $20 for whole set depending on wear.

By "Any", you mean the blank key in the middle of those impossible arrow keys?

And what's with the two separate \ keys? Seriously, Gateway sliced up backspace for the sake of a duplicate key?

Wikipedia has a good article describing the programming features of the AnyKey.

Seems so, sadly.

An actual keyboard called the AnyKey … always nice when someone in the IT industry manages some humour and levity. After the demise of the Happy Mac, it seems that all is lost.
