So the KBT race has been in some people's hands for a while...

What's the overall consensus?

My main question is regarding its compatability with Mac OS X.
I have a macbook pro, and would love to have the KBT race as a portable option. If not, I will get a pure instead....

The Race manual says it's N-KRO, which would (from my understanding) make it incompatible with OS X, but from some DT posts reveal that they are actually 6KRO instead...

Can anyone confirm the 6KRO/NKRO, and even better, whether it's OS X compatible?

I'd be eternally grateful!

The manual probably means it's NKRO in regard to the switch/PCB matrix having diodes to support it (so it's NKRO via PS2). I believe they are 6KRO via USB for apple compatibility, though I'll let a user chime in to be sure.

6KRO. No PS2 support. NKRO is mistakenly used in the English manual.

Hey - I am not a Mac power use by any means, I hate the window manager in OSX so much I just use the terminal for as many tasks as I can, but I plugged my Race in at work and everything seems to work fine on my iMac.  Definitely a nice replacement to that horrible keyboard that comes with the thing...  Will probably be doing a review once I can get some time to sit down and write one.

i just try it on my mac air and work perfectly even the media key and the volume key! the alt button become command button though.

You can easily remap the alt and command buttons in the keyboard settings on your macbook if needed.

Awesome, this is a lot more reassuring having this confirmed by many GH'ers.

Onto a second question, what are some alternative options available for swapping out the keys? I take it that some keys are not standard... is everybody just using the given abs keycaps the keyboard comes with?

I don't think this keyboard is a good candidate for using custom key caps.  I say that mainly because although it has the same keys as most keyboards the keys it does have are often (a) a different width (e.g. arrow keys, shift key, etc) or (b) a different row.  Finding a set that matches perfectly without that franken-cap feel will be difficult.

Pic below shows some of the non-standard keys:

I have not taken a look at how tall the keys are compared to standard cherry keys or SP DS keys but I have a feeling they are a lot taller too.

Those 6 keys on the bottom right are all standard 1.25 sized R1 keys. You can just use blank modifier on it. Now, Trying to get 1.5 sized R5 keys would be a problem. Even 1x1 spaced R5 key is not easy to get.

Check out Total Finder.  It's an essential OS X upgrade.  Along with Alfred.
