Question on Topre RF key press
« on: Sun, 17 June 2012, 08:05:05 »
Hi everyone, I was wondering what peoples opinion of which cherry switch feels closest to a Topre RF? I have only able to try some switch types (at the shops) and its hard to make a comparison. If someone owns a RF as well as diff cherry boards and would care to comment, I would really appreciate it.

I have blues and browns as well as a HHKB2 and neither switch feels anything like the Topre! Blues have a similar weight but the motion is very different.

I only have blues and Topre, and I would agree that they definitely feel anything alike. I just took out my old Blues keyboard, and I honestly thought that it felt a little bit lighter than my Topre. The Topre is only 5 months old though, whereas the blues were used for over two years, so maybe that's part of it.

Are you planning on getting a Topre keyboard? Did you like any of the switch types that you tried out at the stores?

the closest cherry to a topre would be either browns or clears. both are a pretty far cry from the famous topre smoothness though. there's just no substitute for a topre switch if you want that smooth domey feel

keep in mind there are pluses and minuses to both. when i want audible feedback, i need a big fat spring in my switch. when i want to type quickly and quietly i go for a topre

I'd say browns are the closest match, for sure. But there's a softness to Topre's that the cherry's don't have.

Personally, my RF 45g is the greatest board I've ever typed on.

I've just got a Topre recently and reds. Now I'm looking for something maybe closer to a Topre switch to replace my reds, I don't like the reds as much anymore after using the RF. But with the o-rings on the red I'm thinking they might be closest to the feel than the browns. I haven't tried the browns but I've read that people also think the browns are closest but doesn't the browns have a tactile bump when pressed? Isn't the Topre press pretty linear?

I'd say that the 45g topres are pretty noticeably tactile when you press down on them.  Even moreso with the 55g probably.

Browns are very similar to reds.  They have a very subtle patch of resistance just before the actuation point, but apart from that they're almost the same.  Compared with Topre: you know that feeling of smoothly increasing pressure, then when you press the key past a point and it collapses downwards?  Yeah, well browns are not like that.  They're reds with a small rough spot basically.

Browns would be more of a replacement for you red board, if you find the reds too linear.  They're not similar to Topre.

If you want something comparable to Topre consider buckling spring.  It's not the same -- heavier, clicky, and the drop off after actuation is sharper -- but the overall effect is similar.
