Which keyboard with brown switches would you recommend?
« on: Mon, 18 June 2012, 18:08:38 »
Hello GH!

I've had my QPAD MK-85 for about a week now, and i've already fell in love with mechanical keyboards. My current mechanical keyboard is using Cherry MX Red switches, which I find perfect for gaming, but atm. I type a lot, so i'm now looking for a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches, since I don't find Cherry MX switches nice for typing. I'll mainly be using the one with the brown switches for typing and just typing, and the QPAD MK-85 with red switches for gaming and only gaming.

So I would like to ask you guys, which mech keyboard using Cherry MX Brown switches would you recommend me? I've been looking at the Das model s professional silent, and the filco majestouch 2. I found the Das keyboard with german layout which is pretty similar to danish layout, so that would be no problem for me.
I've looked at the Filco majestouch 2 at Keyboardco.com who also sells a danish keyset for the keyboard, which I think is pretty cool.
Sooo, is there any other keyboards using Cherry MX Brown switches that you guys would recommend me, if no, which of the 2 keyboards that i've been looking at would you recommend me?

I'm pretty new to mechanical keyboards, so sorry if i'm going to ask quite a lot of "noobish" questions :D

If you're looking for a board for just typing, might I suggest considering a cherry blue keyboard?  The tactility of the board as well as the clicky sound makes it an ideal switch for many typists.

If those are your only two options, I would recommend the Filco due to its high quality and great reputation.  In fact, if you have the money, I would always go with a Filco.  Having additional perks such as having that Danish keyset definitely helps in making it a worthwhile purchase.

I've been looking at some keyboards using Cherry MX blue switches, but I think the clicky-sounds that the blue switches makes would be irritating, since I talk alot on skype.
And after what i've heard, the browns is ideal for both gaming and typing, and they aren't as 'loud' as the blues. And since i've already got the reds, and the blacks is for gaming only (correct me if i'm wrong), so I tought that the browns would be just perfect for me.

I think there are more options out there, but I haven't been able to find any german / Danish layout keyboards with brown switches besides those that i've mentioned in this thread. I've heard alot of good stuff about the Filco, so I think that's what i'm going to buy.
When I get my new rig up and running, I DO have the money for a Filco, so the price of a Filco keyboard is not a problem to me.

Filco here I come! :D

Since you already like your reds and your are just looking for a bit more tactility for typing, I'd say you are on the right track.  Filco is a good choice.

Newbie here, but I was using a Razer Black Widow and now have a Filco Majestouch1 with browns and it is really fantastic to use.

At the same time (bidding on too many things!) I got a CM Storm Quick fire with browns (10keyless) and have taken that one to work. It makes loads of difference having a good keyboard to type on in both places.

The Filco is great though, it feels like a quality product and the browns are great to type on, I find I type more quickly and more accurately on this and it is a bit quieter than the Razer too.

I prefer using a Topre board for typing. IMO, HHKB > RealForce

This is how I feel. I sold my browns because the were feeling a little light when I was typing and now that I am using blues I make more mistakes and type slower because I'm trying not to bottom out. I wish I had those back, might have to order a new keyboard with browns soon or go with topre.

@rknize
I'm glad to hear that you think the Filco is a good choice, cause I've kinda fallen in love with that keyboard after i've seen some videos of it on youtube.

@Lighthouse
I've typed on the Razer Blackwidow in a hardware shop that we have here in Denmark, and I didn't find it THAT good to type on, actually, I think my current keyboard with Cherry MX red switches is better to type on than the Blackwidow, maybe because i'm sceptic about Razer keyboards, but really.. I didn't find it nice to type on, so I understand why you went for the Filco Majestouch1 with Cherry MX brown switches. So that's one more reason for me not to get a keyboard with Cherry MX Blue switches.

I'm getting more and more excited to get a keyboard using Cherry MX brown switches, when I read something like that, I would love to buy the CM Quickfire with Cherry MX brown switches... if it were available with danish layout yet, but as it seems, the only CM Quickfire available with danish layout so far.. Is the one with Cherry MX red switches.

@Rafen
On my keyboard using Cherry MX red switches I also make quite a lot of mistakes, but I think that's because i've never had a keyboard where I didn't have to bottom out.. I don't know the exact word for not pressing the keys all the way down(???)

Touch typing.  Yeah, I can't do it either and I don't even bother trying.

What about the zowie. Besides the lasered caps it is a good keyboard and should be available in your layout..

Blues aren't bad for gaming, it just takes some time to get used to them. Same thing about reds and typing, it just takes time to get used to the switch. I've gamed with blues, reds and browns. I've also typed with blues, reds and browns. I really don't think you can't pick a switch you absolutely hate unless you don't like noise.

I have several browns to use almost exclusively and I recommend Filco if you have money to spare. If not, then a Compaq MX 11800 would be very nice to own. I have both.
Keyboard: Filco MJ1 104 brown, Filco MJ2 87 brown, Compaq MX11800, Noppoo Choc Brown/Blue/Red, IBM Model M 1996, CMStorm Quickfire Rapid Black
Layout: Colemak experience, speed of 67wpm

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I'm 99.9 % Sure, that i'll go for the Filco MJ2 with brown switches, because i've heard so much good about it.
So when I get the money from my QPAD MK-85, which I will RMA with in a few days, since the spacebar first f'ed up, and now the 0-button on the numpad is totally stuck, i'll order Filco MJ2 and a danish keyset for it, from Keyboardco.com.
I really don't want a new QPAD MK-85, so i'll hope that my Filco MJ2 won't have the same problems when I recieve it :D

I thought you said you were keeping it to use during games.

I WAS gonna keep it yes, but for a $200 keyboard, I don't want my "0" button to be stuck, and my spacebar to f up as it did, and has started doing again. And it shouldn't be necessary for me to buy new stabilizers and stuff to get the keyboard to work as it should, so I thought it would be easier for me just to RMA it, and get a Filco MJ2 instead. :P
