Feature Requests
« on: Fri, 20 July 2012, 23:29:05 »
What features do people want? The more people we have clamoring for something the better we can prioritize our time.

to all the brilliant friends who have left us, and all the students who climb on their shoulders.

I would want google searching to function. I don't know how this works. If they can be asked to re-index a page or if it is done automatically eventually. But it seems like they need to rebuild all their data over geekhack.

Also, I tried to find some way of getting in contact with a moderator. Didn't try too hard but I couldn't find any list of moderators for PM'ing or any e-mail address or anything.

I am really missing the spy. Other systems to get a quick overview of the large amount of content like thread subscription better ajax preloading and such would be great as well.

To elaborate a bit:
The spy allows looking at the content of the post without clicking on it.
Subscriptions are sort of the opposite they help ignore everything except the threads I know I am interested in.
Ajax preloading would help because if the unread posts site was more responsive it would almost be a spy.

Ideally I would like a list of topics with activity and a short extract from the last post. The data should be preloaded so I can quickly check the threads by clicking on it. The list should also have buttons for 'subscribe thread', 'ignore thread' and 'mark thread read.
hm...I had other ideas but I forgot them while typing this. :)
I know I am asking a lot, I am just trying to put down what would be ideal in the long run.
I had a sig once but it's gone. It used to display an icon of a Kinesis. Just imagine that.

I just want the topics with new posts to be bold again. It's really throwing me off not having that. Also, a "First Unread Post" button within the main forum view would be awesome.

I'm seeing a favicon:

I think we should have a list of admins/moderators, if users need something, they can PM one. In the meantime, I noticed that moderator names show up in blue on the users active list at the bottom of the main forum page. Admins are red, but it's so close to the default orange, that it's hard to tell the difference. (I'm using the "nostalgic theme".)

Is it possible to have a new software subforum?

For things like autohotkey, autorave, vimperator, virtual keyboards, etc…

as with all other subforum ideas, until you can show that there's enough traffic for an entire subforum dedicated to it, i would prefer that people just start threads (call it a megathread if you want) in the closest applicable forum

I would love an inline attachments feature. Unless you already have that functionality but I just don't see it?
I don't have a problem uploading my images to my own host, but it does take a little extra work to make a thumbnail etc.

Another feature request would be to be able to customize our custom titles, or have them removed all together. Let the moderators and admins set custom titles so that it's a little more unique, maybe?

Did you try all the themes under Profile -> Forum Profile -> Look and Layout -> Current theme (change) ?

It would also be nice to move the Search box out of the collapsible header and into the menu bar (like GH vB) and also have the unread posts link outside of that header.  It takes up a lot of space and that's the only thing I have it expanded for.  Anyone share my opinion?  ;)

The ability to edit the post count title.  And the other titles.  Seems like we're swimming in titles now.

OK, I moved the search bar out of the upshrink in the Nostalgia theme.  It might not look quite right on narrow renderings.  LMK how it is.

And make PM notifications more obvious - I'm waiting on replies from multiple people and just tried to test-PM myself, you don't even know there is a message unless you manually go to check them.

There seems to be more than one issue here.  For one, sending yourself a test message won't result in a new message notification.  This is because after you send it, you end up back in your message list.  At the bottom is the message that you just sent.  Therefore to SMF, it is "read".  I'm not saying this is good, but that is what is happening.  There is more to it though, because I notice that I don't see the notification even when I am not in the message list.  Tapatalk might have something to do with it.

Anyway, we'll look into it.

Yes, of course. In most of the themes, the orange clashes with other colours and it strains my eyes.
I liked the old theme, so I tried "Nostalgia", but the white and orange don't work, so I reverted to the default theme. However, I find that orange on beige can sometimes still be hard to read with the default theme.
