Sweeet sweet brown alps goodness. This 5140 seems to be in pretty great shape. I guess I'll still be a couple switches off from a full HHKB layout, but it'll do.
Show Image

Please don't just take the switches and scrap the rest. If the computer in good shape, switch swap and get it working....or send the unit my way and I'll put Matias switches in it. It pained me to throw my unit away but my machine was in really bad shape and didn't have a power supply.
Yes, please don't trash it.  I have several of those older ps/2 systems and had no idea they made such a thing in a portable version.  I've never seen dual floppies like that on a laptop.  Quite sweet.

I was talking to a user here about sending me the guts of his 5140 so I could fix mine.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

i was a bit pissy with the guy in the store, they tried to offer me store credit so i just walked out thinking something witty in my head i wish i had thought of 5 seconds earlier and said to the guy at the counter
I hate it when that happens!!!  It's like, 'why couldn't I have thought of that awesome line 30 seconds ago brain!'

Congrats!!  Looks great on the board!  :thumb:
I remember taking the songs from Doom and Doom 2 and converting them to mp3 a long time ago.  I have them on the other computer but I don't think anyone would be interested in that stuff now.
I always liked the Doom music. My buddies and I would make WAD files for Doom 2 and I would compose my own Doom-style MIDI tracks, run then through a DOS-based MIDI to MOD conversion tool, and embed them in the custom map WADs.

I had one level where the map was a giant Misfits skull, and the music was a MIDI version of Hollywood Babylon. It was a fun level, especially weaving in and out between the skull's teeth to find the keys and weapons.
I'd be interested in hearing all this cool stuff!  We spent a bomb on our old cyrix p166 system outfitting it with a soundblaster awe32 wavetable and then upgraded the wave table to the yamaha.  The soundtrack for Descent was unreal.  Still haven't had time to convert that to a wav, but gotta get the system to boot again first. :(

Got a bunch of stuff in the last week--keycaps for the M, more keycaps for the M from Unicomp including two sets of large print to make some large print Ms for my parents, a Unicomp ultra classic, a MKC keycap puller (which works great even on the BS), and some other stuff I can't remember right now.

Honestly, I think I like the stock caps better. I feel like it got a little bit louder with the GMK caps. Might keep it the way it is only for vanity reasons...

I ordered it without any parts presoldered so it should take a while to build.

Did you get the case from winkeyless as well? I picked the Lambo case that was just on MassDrop a few days ago.
Won't be able to see the underside RGB lighting, but oh well.

Nope! I actually got the board built by a fellow GHer. The main reason I have it now instead of later is that, once I saw the Leandre plate in blue, I knew I wanted a 60% board with a black case. And that black case is the iQunix Lambo! I ordered mine off TaoBao, so it hasn't gotten here yet. Typing on some bubble wrap as a makeshift (ghetto) case for now.

Grats on the B.face X2! I'm in love with mine. I built it myself as well and it was a fun project. I went with the WKL diffuser case and it looks great and sounds great too!

How does it feel with ABS key caps? I have read that the PBT space bar has a different sound to the stock ABS one, is that true?

My HHKB has SA, so not quite the same comparison as slushi, but I like it much better than the stock PBT HHKB keycaps.

I actually am using a stock white spacebar as I didn't want to swap out the stem on that switch. The set is the GMK hyperfuse and I actually think I like the feel of the stock keyset but love the looks of the hyperfuse so I will keep it as is.

Edit: to clarify, the swapped keys feel a little louder than before but I am not sure if it is due to the novatouch stems or the keyset. I just received the soft landing pads and so I will be finding an iron to flatten them a little bit before installing in hopes of softening the clack.

I wish I had money for that. It is possible to buy good quality Alps mount caps or do I still have to buy donor vintage boards ?

Currently the options are cannibalizing vintage boards, a Tai Hao set, and Alpine Winter.  I'm not sure how you gauge quality, but I expect the Alpine Winter set will be excellent.  Alps may become more common as the community embraces them, making future sets of keycaps a viable option.  Especially considering the communities now have 9600 more switches to fill then they did at this time yesterday.

Quality ? I'd say the thickness of the caps. I consider my current M0110 to be quality caps, compared to all the 100ish euros MX keyboards you see nowaday (especially the backlighted ones). IBM are nice thick caps too.

A very special package arrived a few minutes ago from Russia.

Ducky Mini MX Blue with Cyrillic keycaps. I ordered it from ****en.pro they have excellent support and were very very helpful. It arrived extremely fast from Moscow to United States.  They included a card that says "From Russia With Love" which is just perfect  :D They also included the Ducky Mini carrying case.
