Any better alternatives to the CM Storm Trigger?
« on: Mon, 23 July 2012, 13:50:13 »
I'm looking of a fully mechanical keyboard that is backlit for under $125 on Amazon. The "best" one I could find was the CM Storm Trigger. Are there any keyboards that I missed?

The CM storm is a great board, I don't have one but I can recommend it wholeheartedly

Filco is better.  Lots of people say that too.

If you're familiar with Reddit.. they're supposed to be doing a group buy for the new Ducky Shine II. You can order any switch color and any LED color combo you'd like. They'll probably retail for like ~$140 but in a group buy it'd probably be in your price range.  This probably won't happen until like late August/September but if you're not in a rush, this should be a great deal for a brand new board. Ducky seems very enthusiastic about the buy, so it's almost certain this is going to happen at a good discount.

Here's the link to the reddit post, as far as I know, all you need to do is keep up with the thread and you can order one when they do the group buy.

EDIT: I just re-read and saw you were looking at amazon only. Your options are probably much more limited if you only want to go through amazon. I believe the only other backlit they have is the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate, and I've heard horror stories about that board.

I'm going to try the KeyCool 87 tenkeyless with backlight! it's not that expensive, and seems really good quality!
I hope getting one soon, and I'll write a review on this site about it :)

I would say the CM storm Quickfire rapid is a great keyboard. I have two, and they're awesome. The CM storm trigger, on the other hand, I would not say is awesome. Now, I don't have one (And probably never will) for a number of reasons. First: I think it's ugly. Besides aesthetics, they used a different OEM. The rapid is OEM'd by costar, the same company responsible for filco's. The trigger and pro are made by a different OEM (Ione?) I have read reports of lower quality.

Given how good the rapid is, and how low a price they sell for, I'd recommend one against filco any day. Even if the filco is better, it surely can't be that much better to justify the price, but people here seem to like them. Maybe I'll get to try one out someday.

So, there are better alternatives: The QF rapid. Unfortunately, it's not backlit.

If you must have back-lighting, I have read good things about the Ducky shine (the shine II is supposed to be really great) and the new Keycool 'boards (which are TKL: Awesome!)

I had both a QuickFire Rapid and Pro, and the Rapid was much better quality.  The Pro even rocked back and forth when I used the number pad.  I also have a Filco and while not much better than the Rapid, I do like the Multicam pattern and the stabilizers seem to be made to tighter tolerances.

I had a Trigger for about a week. I initially liked it, as my first mechanical in years. The first thing I had issue with was, at the time, there was no easy way to enable the Windows Key. They totally killed it. Later after my (& others?) questioning them on this they amended their FAQ to include instructions. You dedicate a profile to having the WinKey active. The second thing that bothered me was not being allowed into their online support forum, as an owner I was major PO'd. They NEVER replied to my questions why? Next was the backlighting. I've seen backlit keyboards, I couldn't believe how bright the lowest setting was. It was BRIGHT and went up from there. Then the nail in the coffin. The LEDs for CapsLock & ScrollLock lit together regardless which key was pushed. That was verified by CM as a failure. That was my opportunity to return it to Amazon. Yay!

I next bought the Tesoro Durandal G1NL which was more $ when I bought it but is currently $111 on Amazon! It's a MaxKeyboard relative, they distribute and obviously use some similar parts. Look at the keys, better layout for backlighting. It lacks the 5 dedicated macro keys but is slimmer because of that. The WinKey is a toggle. Both are Cherry Brown. The backlighting is great, low is, the keys are Red. Then you go up to more brightness.  The included wrist rest is smaller but I'm getting a 3M anyway. The shape is more conservative but has some flair. It has macro software and profiles, and NKRO on USB. So, I love mine and would recommend it especially with the new low price on Amazon.
Also, it has two USB and audio/mic pass through. Not powered like is optional on Trigger.

i have both a QFR and a TKL Keycool 87, and I can tell u even tho they use the same switches, the feel is quite different for both, i dunno if its the materials they use, and the click sounds are quite different, i do prefer the QFR over the keycool, although keycool has a very good build quality as well
