Best brown switch gaming keyboard?
« on: Wed, 01 August 2012, 21:01:47 »
Hey guys, a couple months ago I got rid of my steelseries 6gv2 and CM quickfire rapid in blues because they both didn't feel right for me for gaming. The steelseries I had had a lot of things wrong with it that supposedly a lot of other people had problems with as well (sticky space bar and keys coming off very easily) The quick fire rapid was terrible for me because I double tap a lot and we all know blues are terrible for that.

Anyways, I'm in the market again but this time I researched a lot and came to the conclusion that brown switches are the best for me. Can you guys recommend me some good boards? It must have media keys (volume up and down)

I'm leaning towards the Zowie Celeritas at the moment. It has everything I need plus a hand rest. The RTR technology seems pretty cool for MMORPG games as well when you need to spam those keys as fast as possible. Anyone have any input on this board? I can't seem to find much people using it. I also heard the space bar problem can be easily fixed if you call them and ask for a replacement.

Blues are known for having double tap issues, and I FIRMLY believe that blues are terrible for gaming for this 1 reason.  In many games you need to double tap a lot or spam 1 button and blues simply don't let you do that.  I have tried getting used to it but its simply not as effective.

I game with blues as well. Never had that issue at all. but to answer your question, My personal favorite gaming form-factor is the poker (so far). I'ts really nice being able to have your hands so close together, rather than spread way far apart like normal keyboards. If you need the F keys, than I would get something like a RACE or Choc mini. Again, this is personal opinion. : )

Did you not read my post? I said I tried getting used to it but it's not effective, so yes I did experience it.

Anyways does anyone here in geekhack have any input on the Zowie Celeritas? It doesn't seem like much people here has that keyboard.

It seems like an okay keyboard. nothing special though. I would save some money and get something like a Rosewill RK-9000. It's pretty much the same if not better. But if you really need that RTR technology, and the wrist rest, than go for the Zowie.

Blues aren't bad for gaming, they just have a learning curve. Reds, browns and blacks have a very low learning curve.

As for boards, I'd with with a WASD, Filco, or Rosewill

Yeah I would go with the above boards but I would really much prefer media keys.

Keep in mind that the Zowie (ansi version) has a bigass Enter. So it might be hard to find replacement keys.
I never used the rtr feature on mine as it's kinda unseless for me.
Other than that I like the keyboard (I have the iso version with normal iso Enter)

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I just purchased a Ducky DK9008G2 with ABS keycaps from tigerimport.  I hope I didn't make the wrong choice!

Does anyone here have this keyboard?

I also use blues for gaming, no problems whatsoever. All comes down to personal preference really.

As for the Ducky, it's pretty much a shine but with only the WASD keys backlit and ive had no issues with my shine. It seems to be decently well built.

The Thermaltake Mekka G1 is the same as the Zowie Celery, but it has a normal ANSI layout (no big enter) and black switches.  It would have been a good choice.

I hope the ducky is awesome for you!

You made a pretty good choice., but in my opinion, getting a rosewill would have been a better one. How much did you pay for the ducky?

double tap issues...hah. That's a joke, i know a lot of SC2 friends who play with mx blues and they don't even have the double tap issues.   you double tap and spam keys constantly so double tapping aside, its really a myth unless you type upwards to 150+ WPM.

It's not saying it's impossible to double tap with blue, but relatively it's much easier to double tap with red/black, then brown, then blue.  In the end it's the player that counts, but the right tool helps :P

I read somewhere that the zowie has Nylon keycaps. If this is the case, it is something special about it. I have also read that it occasionally has problems. I think it was the switch soldering or something.

I would expect the keycaps on it to feel more like POM than PBT.

Yeah, I play Starcraft 2 with MX Blues and I have no issues tapping keys repetitively. I'm not sure why I see so many people trashing MX Blues for being bad for gaming today. They work just fine, in fact the only two situations I would not recommend blues for are people who don't want a noisy keyboard, and people who play primarily FPS games.
