Best Manly Scissors - A BETTER Than Lifetime Warranty
« on: Thu, 13 January 2011, 18:57:15 »
I love all my cutco products. They are expensive (had a relative working as a sales rep for them) but after a demo how can you say no?  They really stand behind their products and I have always had good experiences when dealing with them / vector.  My favorite is the salmon knife. Slices those stubborn roasts reeaaal nice.
I like Topre!

$127.99? Man, who would ever spend that much money on something as basic as scissors?

Errr....

The one time I showed my dad my Model M he said it would make a better weapon than a keyboard... I was tempted to hit him with it.

Can you stab a burglers eyes out with a keyboard?   Even a Model M would be a minor concussion.

I dunno, a Model F might crack a skull. Then again, I think the limiting factor is how hard the average Geekhacker can swing it. Not many pictures on here, but most seem to be pretty geeky (dur). iMav, though; he could kill you with with a Model F. Hell, he could kill you with a dirty look. He'd kill you so hard the fire alarm would go off.

These scissors are DOPE.

Rip, do you wash the resin off these yourself, or do you send them in for a professional cleaning too?

Already got some. And a whole Cutco knife set. Parents bought it a long time ago (20+ years?) and I've been using it my whole life. And one of my friend's brother sold these as well.

As much as there's a huge mark up, there is a lifetime guarantee of sharpness, and they've been around for a long time.

All those crappy Chinese slave-made things have totally messed
up peoples idea about what real quality products, made of quality materials, cost .
My late grand-dad had a couple of scissors of the same quality, just euro-made,
he used them to cut out sisal from huge rolls he imported from Java and turned in to
floor-carpets for auto-mobiles ...
Low quality steel would go dull after cutting half a carpet, the good ones where nice and sharp for months .
**** like that DOES matter for professionals !

I prefer Scissors for 2 bucks, and to put the remaining 97 into something that's worth spending on. Scissors for 2 bucks last for years too, and you can sharpen them. Gasp.

Of course, nowadays, even the cheap scissors have a pattern of grooves on the inside so that they sharpen themselves. Quality products do last a lifetime, and it certainly is true that what with the cheap imported stuff that's available, it's hard to even find quality products when you want the quality version of a particular item. And hard to be sure it is the quality product, and not the cheap one at a higher price to make it look like it has quality - which is a reason that many people have given up bothering.

Scissors aren't that manly, although hard to squeeze ones are. I practiced for years because I always thought of my mother holding them ready to cut hair. And cutting hair is not manly.

These days, I use my martial art skills to do any form of chopping.

That's not very nice, rip.

Isn't bondi outrageously packed all the time? I much prefer quiet beaches without screaming kids. However, in England we get no summer anyway, so sitting on a beach in 15*c is not seen on everyone's to do list.

Hanzo steel.

*sigh* I hate to be a killjoy, but as a frequenter of a couple of knife forums, proclaiming Cutco steel as something amazing is about the equivalent of an OCN poster coming here and proclaiming his new G15 keyboard "is the best keyboard, evar!!1!!"

I've used the Cutco scissors and they're fine. The knives however are a joke, and in every knife community I've visited about as highly regarded as Bose is on an audiophile forum.

Pray-tell, what ARE considered good knives? I'll come out and say that I have a not-even-remotely-cheap set of Henckels, and they are the sharpest things I have ever used, ever. They also seem fairly well constructed. However, I didn't pay for them, I just picked them out (wedding registry gift), so Im curious as to what are considered the topre of kitchen knives.

Probably the best Knife equivalent of a Topre in my mind would be a Nenox It is a premium knife at a premium price.

You can get equivalent or even better knives for cheaper, but you have to know where to look and, be willing to be patient sometimes.

For those that are interested, a good place for cutlery geeks is the In The Kitchen sub-forum at Knifeforums.com.

For shopping, check out chef knives to go and Japanese Chefs Knives. I've ordered from both and had good experiences with both.

I'm currently using a Tojiro DP 240mm Gyoto (Japanese for 'Cow Sword') but have my eye on a Hattori FH-7 Gyoto.

Knives, like keyboards, are a very personal decision, but a lot of fun

$1,521.  I knew I shouldn't have cheaped out.

REAL Hanzo Stteeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllll!

Where's the dude that was complaining about $90 scissors?

Yeah, Korin charges full-boat retail on all the Nenox stuff. I've yet to find a good discount location to get it. The more exotic Japanese Nenox knife styles can get pretty silly price-wise. Need a $4700 Yanagi? (meat slicer)

What I'd actually like to get sometime is a Nenox 240mm Gyoto at "only" $500

Zwilling/J.A. Henckels scissors and knives are pretty good, the are made in solingen but
are of good quality (solingen stuff isnt that good anymore in general because the chinese
etc startet to assemble their "dirt" there to get the name).

I actually dint knew it, but they seem to be quite succesful in the US:
