Trying to decide between two keyboards...
« on: Thu, 09 August 2012, 04:00:02 »
I'm planning on getting a Filco pretty soon, as I hear nothing but good things about them. But I can't decide between Reds or Browns. I recently tried out my friend's DK1087 with Blacks, and I didn't care for it for typing, but I liked the feel of the switch. Which is why I think I might enjoy Reds quite a bit. However, I've been typing on Blues for about 8 or so months now, so I'm used to the whole tactile feeling. But I've heard some complaints about Browns. So what do you guys think, should I take a chance and try out the Reds for a whole new feeling, or play it safe and get some tactile Browns?

If you like light typing, reds are great for that. Very very easy to press down. Also great for gaming imo.
As for me personally, I find them way too light compared to other switches. Browns just have that subtle tactile bump to make them a lil 'dirty' and enjoyable.

I thought browns were very loosely tactile,  for me after 30wpm they felt like linear switches.

Just get both keyboards and return the one you don't like as much. Then you'll get to try each type.

That's pretty brilliant. But there are two problems. One being that I'm afraid I'll want to keep them both, and two being that I don't really have enough money to afford ordering both right now.  I might end up doing that though, that's pretty smart.

You probably will end up wanting to keep both. As much as I'm a Topre fanboy these days, I can't bring myself to sell my MX based boards.

I don't even want to get rid of my BWU, and I honestly don't have a ton of passion for this one. It's just hard to not love any mechanical keyboard.

Also, thought you'd enjoy this.

get rid of your bwu and buy both filcos, decide which one you like, then sell the one you dont and put that money toward a topre. then sell the filco cause you won't want it anymore.

but seriously, do get rid of the bwu, that thing sucks.

I'm not going to get rid of it because it was my first mechanical keyboard, but I do plan on retiring it as soon as my wallet allows it.

your choice is between reds and browns?
and you have experience with blacks and blues? hmm...
and keep in mind that, when it comes to key feel, there's only like, a 10% difference between browns and reds. They're almost identical..
that said, since you already have a board with MX blacks, you pretty much know the score with linear switches... so..
i'd choose browns, no question.

You'll probably like tactile switches.. most people do..
and please disregard any ignorant brown MX "dirty feeling" comments... that opinion totally baffles me b/c reds easily feel the most friction-y out of the whole MX lineup. I mean, when you combine linear action with a light spring, all you can feel when slowly depressing a Red MX switch is the grainy friction between the slider and housing... At least with the browns, that graininess is masked by the tactile bump to some degree...

If you plan on keeping your keyboard w/ blue switches I would get the reds for variety.

If you plan on using only one keyboard I would get the browns, as you will surely miss the tactile bump and will almost surely make a lot more typos without their familiar feel to the point it drives you crazy. I know I did!
