looking for a fingertip mouse to replace G5?
« on: Tue, 11 September 2012, 10:21:02 »
hey there, my dear and faithfull companion Logitech G5 just completed his lifespan after serving me for 3 whole years at work and home, and now passed on to mice heaven. It is a very sad moment for me and my PC, we stroke it gently and pray that our teardrops that fall on the scroll might bring it back to life, but it seems like this mouse is no more, it has ceased to be, it has expired and gone to meet it't maker. it's a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace, If i hadn't kept the USB plugged in it would be pushing up the daisies! (yeah you know the rest)

Now, im looking for a replacement. I found G5 (version 2 in black/blue with the now standard 2 thumb buttons) to be the perfect mouse for my fingertip-claw hybrid style. Others might think of it as more of an "ergonomical" or even palm grip mouse, but I have quite large hands, so i am able to rest my palm at the mousepad while stiring the mice with my thumb and fingertips. I guess its some sort of palm-fingertip grip, except i dont have the palm on the mouse, but i use the entire rest of my hand to move the mouse. Thumb to stir it right, pinky to stir it left, with the rest of the fingers supporting. when moving up/down i switch into a claw-grip and use all of my fingertips to pull the mouse forward or backward with the palm always resting on the table.

Now, i am looking for a mouse with similiar size and ergonomics. I have tried the Logitech models that are meant to "succeed" it like g500 but i didnt like them, mainly because of the glossy fabric, it wasnt nearly as steady fealing as the cracked assymetrical "griptape" that covered the G5 (the blue and black one that i owned).

i have owned SpawN (the one with the weights in the middle) but i didnt feel comfortable with it, it felt sort of clumsy and not as smooth as the G5 for circular movements.

my friend has recommended Zowie AM or Razer Naga Hex but there is nowhere i can try these on before actually buying. ive gotten tons of "deathadder of course... dont you own one yet?!" responses. but i doubt it will fit my grip style since Intellimouse works terrible for me and they are very similiar. Some say that Mamba is actually smaller and sleeker than DA and works for fingertippers with large hands, but its a little expensive.

So right now it basicly comes down to Zowie or Naga. the Zowie looks more ergonomic, yet the multiple buttons on Naga would actually be very benefitial to me (talking about the hex version with 8 buttons) since i play lots of MMOs, and the size and shape doesnt look to bad either. My Concern with the naga is that it looks very oily and "plastic" (again, the hex version that comes in jade green or red. the original naga is not for me because i disliked the positioning and feel of the side buttons, the became more of an obstacle than a tool), and i believe its quite light aswell wich would take me some time to get used to since i use some weights on my G5.

Other suggestions, or comments on the mentioned mice would be greatly appreciated. If you have only tried or only own one of them, please provide some information and pros and cons, what grip type you use etc  rather than just posting "i own the naga and its great"

If you are keeping your palm stationary while moving the mouse, you'll want a small mouse, so as to allow for plenty of range of motion. I do something slightly similar: I keep my wrist on the wrist rest of my ergonomic mousepad, and hold/move the mouse entirely with my fingertips. My obsession with small size and light weight (easier for fingertip control) led me to get a Team Scorpion Zealot: 10.3cm long, weight 63g. Really quite like it.

That razer is 1. a razer, 2, probably way too long for what you're trying to do with it.

The most popular fingertip grip mice right now are CM Storm Spawn, Logi G9x, Zowie Mico, Steelseries Sensei.

I use a modified G9x with "precision" grip with a "ledge" from a Spawn added for ring finger support. The laser tracks well and I don't have a problem with "lifting" that other laser users complain about.

I had a 1st edition G5 for over 5 years until the scroll wheel broke, and also had a rather hard time finding a replacement for it. Logitech's newer G5-like models are indeed quite crappy with their weird extra button placement and stuff. I didn't quite like Razer mice, and the "amazing" Steelseries Sensei didn't fit my hand at all.

Then I found this new gaming brand called Mionix and bought their Naos 5000 mouse. It's really big and wide which needed some getting used to. At first I thought it's way too clumsy for fast-paced games, but now I just love it and own them noobs in BF3 and CS like never before. It's a really great mouse with customizable weights (although the cartridge design is a bit odd) and fits my hand perfectly. The only real downside I've noticed over time is that the smooth coating on the surface starts to crack a bit. In my very heavy duty use, this started happening after about 4 months. Still, if you loved the G5, I'm quite sure you'll love this.

Another mouse that could be worth trying is the Mad Catz R.A.T. series. I have no personal experience from them, but I've heard they're quite good for people with bigger hands. I think they're something you wanna get your hands on before buying, since the rather unusual design probably isn't for everyone.

Ah yes, forgot to mention that. The way I grip my mouse kind of varies, but I'd say I mostly use my palm. I could see this mouse working for a fingertip user as well, though.

From what I've been reading, the Cooler Master CMStorm Spawn mouse is supposed to be very good for claw/fingertip users.  And with a suggested retail price of only $40usd.  My G9 still works, but I'm considering getting the Spawn anyways.

Lovin' my G9x. I have medium sized hands, and can palm/claw/fingertip (10%/20%/70%) the mouse however I feel like it.

I'd recommend the Zowie AM, also.
it has the most fault-free sensor on the market and the buttons are of incredibly high quality. the grip is pretty good although a few of my friends complain that it's slippery, which I personally have not experienced. the opposite is true here.
super comfortable for fingertip grip.
it feels really solid too, and the scroll wheel is nice and grippy.
really hard to fault it. :)

I use the same grip and movement that you do, Velma, and I'm using a cheap Gear Head LM6000U. It is just larger than what I'd call 'medium sized'.

Roccat Savu is good for finger and claw grip. It is also somewhat more "long" than "square", has suitably placed side buttons, sand paper sides which I find pleasant to hold, and all buttons (left, right, middle, sides) all have consistent tactile feeling without being harsh. (I own one)

I've heard some not-so-good things about Roccat's reliability.. a couple of my friends had their mice and they broke down pretty quickly. That was one of their first models though, things may have changed.

LOL ^ but I don't know how big your hands are but maybe a razer Lachesis might be what you're looking for. The pictures on the razer website are a bit misleading in my opinion. It's a long flat mouse, I don't personally own one myself (with my medium sized hands) but having used my friends I can say I prefer it to my g9x.

cause then people would think it looks ugly and not purchase them, until they actually try it and be like "oh **** its actually comfortable, not just butt ugly"

If you found the G5 perfect for you, then the best thing you could do is probably to find one with an identical shape (or as close to identical as possible).

You say you didn't like the G500.  Have you looked at the G400?  It's basically the same as the old MX518, which was a favorite of FPS gamers for years and years.  It's the exact same dimensions and design as the MX518, except with a better optical sensor and more dps options.  Other than that, the same.  I think it's very similar to the G5 in terms of shape, too, although it's been a long time since i've used my G5, so I can't say for sure.

I used to palm grip my G5, now I claw grip a G9x.  Took a bit of time to adjust, but now I'm completely comfortable with it.  The G9x with the precision grip (grippy dry texture) is a pretty typical choice for fingertip mouse users, but if your hands are big enough to fingertip grip the G5, the G9x will seem tiny to you.

The G400 is the closest to the shape you want and is one of the best performing mice available in terms of sensor performance... you can't go wrong with the new revision of the Logitech G400 that has no prediction like the earlier revision.

I'm using the cyborg rat 7 right now and its pretty great. The versatility is really what makes it, you can have finger tip or palm based if you want. All you need to do is unscrew a couple parts and move them around.

Seriously? Just get a G400 and call it a day. 3600 dpi optical, exact shape as the mx518 and the g5

Logitech G9X.

Great mouse with multiple grips you can use. I like the MX518 but the G9X is much more enjoyable to use.
