What is the quality of the WASD keycaps?
« on: Sat, 03 November 2012, 12:09:20 »
Hello all. I'm wondering what people think about the quality of the keys from WASD. I'm looking for some new caps for my Poker with the two tone white / grey color scheme. Ordering these from WASD would be fairly cheap, but I'm worried that they will feel cheap. I have been considering PBT keycaps, but haven't tried them yet. If anyone has experience with both, do WASD keys feel "cheap" compared to a nice set of PBTs?

Thanks for your responses!

They do feel cheap compared to PBT or Cherry caps. Also they are OEM profile which I think is horrible.

CHERRY PROFILE FTW.

Thanks for the reply!

I really want to get my hands on those thick PBT cherry profile keycaps that are having a group buy right now, but damn I who knows when we will have enough orders to get those . Have you tried both thick PBT and regular PBT? If you have, can you feel a difference? I have been eyeing a set of all white PBT caps on ebay (no my preferred color scheme).

I couldn't really tell the difference, PBT is just lovely :P For me it is more about the profile, OEM is evil!

You need to give a standard Cherry doubleshot set a try. You'll never go back from there! :D

Hmm I don't think that I have ever tried anything other than OEM profile. These are the caps I'm eyeing right now http://www.ebay.com/itm/104-PBT-white-BLANK-keycaps-for-MX-cherry-keys-good-for-Filco-Leopold-Noppoo-/300606890270?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item45fd91211e but I can't tell what profile they are (although I have never had any complaints about OEM profile).

Right now I'm leaning towards purchasing that set of PBT caps, but I will keep checking this thread for further opinions.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think makes cherry profile so much better than OEM? I quite like the profile of the keys on my Poker.

They are lower to the board and have a sharper angle, hard to explain without pictures and I am just about to go out for dinner!

I wouldn't ever go back to OEM.

I currently type on a wasd 37 keys set
OEM profile is really awful, as said before keys are towers and not comfortable at all
plus that ABS plastic is cheap and already shiny after 2 month
Only thing that keeps me using it is that it's blank and it helps me improve my touchtyping
If you can't wait for a group buy I think Signature Plastic double shot keycaps set is a good option

You could order the sampler kit and see for yourself: http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/sampler-kit-1.html
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

How is the profile and the feel of the signature plastics double shots? I heard they were thing which leads me to believe that they wouldn't feel as good as good as the thick pbt set.

Cherry are many times nicer. Even a beaten up shiny used set doubleshots is better in my opinion. Obviously I could promote my buy here, but you already know about it. So, if you want something now you could always get a set of Cherry modern pbt which are a bit thinner or pom of an 8000 series board. These are also prety nice caps even though they are only lasered, and it gives you an idea of how Cherry profile is for a low cost. There aren't any good price Cherry with good set of PBT on ebay right now, but I do have a lasered set if you are interested in them.

So you are saying that you think the profile of the keys is more important than the plastic used to make it? I will definitely try to obtain a cheap set of cherry profile keys. did you say the set you had was pbt or abs?

totally agree,
OEM is tiring to type on especially if you often switch from laptop to mech
plus I have choc mini POM caps and they feel pretty much like the few cherry double shot I own

The profile is more important to me, but the material has some difference in feeling. People can call me crazy, but I prefer abs most, then pbt, then pom. I have a set of like new white pbt ansi set with lasered legend from 8113LUAUS/0. Main typing block will fit Poker perfect. Spacebar will need a stem glued in to make that compliant as Cherry use an off center switch on G80 with 6.25 space.

Black Widow has oem profile. Cherry profile is lower in height.

They are OK nothing special.  I agree that I would put them at OEM quality and their profile is somewhat high.  I prefer the SP DS quality, feel, and profile over the WASD keycaps.

Interesting.

Lysol, I know the price of your groupbuy set is a very good price already, but is there any chance of you adding an etched set of cherry replicas. Can't bring myself to spend 75$ on keycaps....

Also, what did you mean by "modern cherry PBT"
