On another forum I'm a member of, the rule is no auctions, and you are required to post a price. You can only post once every 14 days in the classifieds, and if you repost something that hasn't sold within 90 days of first posting it, you have to lower the price 20%. Maybe some ideas in there?

please no. I like the freedom to do sales how I want. If you are annoyed by people backing out of your auction, do a straight up sale instead. spoofed bids don't actually hurt anyone, they are just annoying.

At first I was all "DEY TERKIN BOUT TAKIN ARR SALEING STUFF"

Then, I realized you meant just auctions, not the ability to sell things at reasonable prices and I went "Oh, well that's reasonable and sound"

I meant that with an auction you have time to evaluate if its something you want and if its worth what its going to cost you. You don't just plain *miss* them like you might a straight up sale for the high value items around here.

That's another rule of that other forum. You can't remove the price once it's been sold.

I don't think it's a good idea. It would make no difference from how it's done now. If there are to be auctions, they should remain in this sub.

implying that auctions are the only way for geekhack to make money? or that there is not a difference between a charity auction and one for sole individual profit?

implying that GH auctions are more important than personal auctions? Let's take Glissant for example; did you s**t on his auction? Probably not. You don't know the cause for which someone is hosting an auction, therefore, have no right judging people for it.
They might have a good reason for doing it.

Secondly - if we say stop hosting auctions, it should be across the board. The best way to express your feelings about auctions, is stay away from them or complain somewhere else (like off-topic) and stop s**tting on peoples threads.

I don't think they are more important, at all. But you're comparing what amounts to a charity auction (people donating stuff to be sold), to a personal auction. These are very different things in my opinion. Even the government views giving to charity different than giving to someone else, and this is reflected in the tax code (forget about that pesky gift clause, it has a limit unlike philanthropy).

At GH, auctions very, very rarely will come in at under value. The only time we see auctions are for known, high value pieces that have rarity, or for charity. The former is clearly geared at getting the most money possible for a selfish cause, while the latter is intended to benefit not only an individual but the community as a whole. To me the former is the definition of exploitative.

That reason alone is why many niche forums ban auctions. They exploit the fact that you have a small community that all want the same thing, so they will drive prices above value. This is the only themed forum I know that allows auctions in its classifieds, and I think that's really telling.

Cheers,

If someone loses their job and has to auction all of their things off to support their family, that's just as good of a cause as raising money to keep GH running. It's not for you to decide which one should be and which one should not be. That's why I said, if you want to stop auctions, then do it across the board. That means no more GH or member auctions. Period.

Period.

And I never said I'm against that; only a distinction exists between charity and other auctions. I feel strongly that no auctions should be allowed for the aforementioned reasons. And we should probably cut off the derailment soon, or at least have the mods move this discussion elsewhere.

They could just sell their items like a normal classifieds thread...

That being said, we should move this discussion to the feedback/ suggestion thread if you gentlemen don't mind.
