[IC]The Toxic set [OP updated 12/08]
« on: Sat, 10 November 2012, 02:43:59 »
I've had this idea in my head for a bit and wanted to put it out there and see what people thought. Now that the interest check has been going for awhile we are going to go for a custom color "Toxic" green that for now I will call "TOX", and GX for dark charcoal.

Here are some mock ups that Batmann made:

Batmann's mock ups are what the group buy will include, however there may be a couple minor tweaks to be made still.

The goal is to wait until the Cherry legends are complete, but if it looks like that will take too long then we may just go with WYSE font. The group buy (once started) will run until February/March time frame unless a slight delay would allow us to use Cherry legends. Just remember the longer the group buy runs, the cheaper the set should become, even the base sanctuary set got very reasonably priced while including new legends AND tons of extra keys.

I am also contacting local vendors here on geekhack to try and have a bonus pack of keys available for purchase to match this set. A couple vendors are already on board by sharing some of their double shot legends, and I'm waiting to hear back from other vendors as well. If you are a vendor and I did not contact you, feel free to message me how you might like to participate and we can work something out. The idea is to promote our local vendors which in turn benefits us all. So far keypop.net has pledged to allow us to use their crossbones legend, techkeys.us has pledged participation but we have not discussed legends yet (maybe center stemmed stepped caps lock), and ZOMG Keycaps! has pledged the bio-hazard legend.

tempting. is there any interest in making one big set out of everything + one green addon set? would make all parts cheaper and prevent tsangan kit melt-down down the road.

I was thinking of doing this:

Slightly different colors, I was going to go for black and a barely darker green. Thoughts?

Interested! I deffinatley think there should be some new color schemes like this one. There have been plenty of the black white and red which have been done a lot as of late.

That is what I was thinking. All packaged together like sanctuary set and then green tsangan and modifier together. I think only iso sets would not be included.

I'm certainly interested in a base set, and iso addon and a 17 key addon.

I won't be able to afford it until after Christmas though. Presumably things won't move that fast though?

as long as the base green on grey comes with the tsangan set i am in for one set! if you are running it you should talk to 7bit about using some of his legends!

Yes this is pretty awesome.

Also I'm not in a major rush, I figured run the Group buy until the middle of January or early February and start collecting money at that time. Also if we delay enough we may be able to use Cherry legends which will supposedly be ready in December for use. I am even more inclined to wait on placing the order with SP until we CAN use them.

I'm down if we have a tsangsan kit for the set.

If they are closer to this colour (i.e. with a bit more yellow than the original mockup), I would be interested, but not until next year.

Oh, and with that green on black modifiers.

Or ... what about black on toxic green main keys, with toxic green on black modifiers?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Several times recently November/December has been stated for final test keys so if that isn't the case then the font for the community, by the community, needs more insight.

Also I can help with the mock up
I have a tkl layout somewhere already designed on illustrator, I can do the VAT on GX (I'll need some clarification on the accent stripe thing though and also a source for the font)

I'm happy to share the layout if there is a place for that.

If so you want those with Cherry font or WYSE? Or is the R3 legends also that weird giant font on the quasi dolch set from R3?

I'm not really a fan of those, I really want this to be with Cherry font so I'm trying to get a realistic idea when they will be ready for use, and potentially try to be a stick to poke for collection of the funds. Just look how quickly Sanctuary set was created? I'm kind of dumbfounded what is taking Cherry legends so long. I don't think we should be holding up US legends if alternate characters from other languages are holding it up. Cater to the majority of the community. Heck use this Toxic set for refining the legends if need be. I'll help with donating and test key fees if need be.

Right I don't want to send the order to SP until February or March. 4-5 months from now roughly. Does someone with more time available like myself need to drum this up and get the collection going? If it is a donation basis then what does it matter if the donation is now or slightly later? I'd just get it done.

Sanctuary group buy started in July and we will not have the keys until December I believe. I'm looking for at a similar time table.
