Do you have a keyboard without keys to adjust volume, start and stop videos, really do anything except type letters?

Or do you have Media Keys -- but they are ugly or don't match your lovely Cherry-profile keycaps?

Now you can have the best of both worlds!

Announcing a Group Buy for a custom-designed 7-keycap Media Key set.  To be available in various colors to match the discriminating person's color palette, these keys include:

Play/Pause
Stop
Rewind
Fast Forward

plus

Mute
Volume Down
Volume Up

They will be double-shot in Escape/Function Row Cherry (DCS) Profile.  They may also be available in J and K-series in-fill.

These keys will be available in the following popular colors:
Quantities ordered as of 27-Jan-2013 09:00 PST:

A) Black Keys with Bright White legends = 5
B) Bright White keys with Black legends = 1
C) Bright White keys with Red legends = 4
D) Red Keys with Bright White legends = 5
E) Gray keys with Orange legends = 18

C and D will match Klaxon keycaps.

Depending on demand, prices will be a-okay as well!

25 Sets = $25
30 Sets = $20
40 Sets = $15

NOTE:  Pricing is based on individual color combinations.  Number of combinations hitting MOQ will affect pricing.  Shipping and PayPal fees not included.  CO2 is bad for the atmosphere.  Music makes people happier.  Ownership of an MX mechanical keyboard not required but will improve usability.  YMMV.

So order early and often!  Fancy Google form is here:

  <<<<<

All proceeds beyond costs will go to the geekhack.org hardware fund!

Thanks for looking!

Additional images as requested:

Representative image only.

I only had the 3 volume keys made up in this color scheme. Actual set will have all 7 Media keycaps.

Nice looking keys Mr. Koi :)  I'm pretty confident that these will get down to a lower price tier.

EDIT:  Where are these shipping from?  Should the address include a country?

Thanks very much!

These will be shipping from California, so include as much information as needed for the USPS and its worldwide affiliates to find your mailbox! Often they are indeed picky about such things as the difference between Paris, Texas and Paris, France, so yes, please include a country!

Do you have pictures of the other two set colors?

I had prototypes made in the first four colors, so I also have a picture on white on red.  I did not get prototypes of orange on gray, so I don't have a picture of that.

I'll post more pictures or links to pictures today.

Interested in a couple orange on grey sets, do you have a date set when you are going to close orders?

I want to close orders on Jan 01, 2013.

How do you cancel this? I accidentally pressed red on white, but wanted orange on grey instead.

I have changed your order to Orange on Grey.

Thanks to all!

He does specify further down that it's DCS profile so obviously SP caps.

Time for a refresher course on profiles and where to get them?  ;)

Shame on me, I skimmed the text for SP and didn't notice where it said DCS.

E) Gray keys with Orange legends
Is the gray you speak of what some people around here call charcoal?

That was down-voted in the IC phase.  However I did prepare legends for that very purpose, but did not have prototypes made.

I would very much like to keep the GB phase constrained so we hit MOQ.  After that we will have molds and designs and (hopefully) more than one supplier.

But for now, just the popular options.

Can you put the totals of each set in the OP? Hopefully as numbers get higher, more will join in.

It was the J and K series pictures, perhaps?

Yes, the first round were indeed made beautifully by QWERKeys.  Future editions, including the all-important Miami Dolphins Edition may also be available there as well.  This round is about an MOQ for double-shot legends and getting a stock of popular colors in place.  Long-term availability planning is underway, and will be announced after this round is complete.

Is it possible to get play/stop/back/forward with white on red, and the others red on white?

How closely will they match the Klaxon (RA 2 clone)?

Hmmm.  It is possible if both color combinations reach MOQ.  Order at least one, then if it becomes possible, we can switch some of the keys when the actual purchase is made.

Regardless, any Red or White colors used will exactly match Klaxon (assuming Klaxon is done by SP.)

I could get black keys made, but they will be blank, and unsuitable for post-production legending. 1x relegendable keycaps are an option, and mostly in stock.

Sorry,

I was answering as if I was in another thread.

Sure, Red on Black would look sharp.  It didn't track well in the early IC, but there is no cost to add it to the Google doc, so YES!

I was going to order some red on white in addition to what I ordered before.  However, your form defaults to "1" for red on black too... can't seem to unselect it and there's no zero option.  Hmm...

If we get enough orders to cover mold costs with this group buy, then all colors and future group buys can include these keys.

But first we need to get enough orders to cover THIS buy.

Hoping for it to hit a 40 or more orders and will drop in for one or 2. Patience will do the job

I have been interested in this for a while, but each time I look at them again, I realize how huge the legends are. My fear is that they will dominate every layout. I wonder if there are more like me who agree. I would be more interested in them if they were smaller, or perhaps weren't solid but with for instance only the edges of the symbols highlighted.

guess I kinda have to agree on the legend sizes being a bit on the large side

I have been interested in this for a while, but each time I look at them again, I realize how huge the legends are. My fear is that they will dominate every layout. I wonder if there are more like me who agree. I would be more interested in them if they were smaller, or perhaps weren't solid but with for instance only the edges of the symbols highlighted.

The prototypes were made with etch-and-fill legends.  The production versions will be made via double-shot with a smaller printable area.  And in the initial Interest Check thread I proposed a variety of sizes, including legends approximately the same height as a capital "H" on the main keycaps.  IBM made the legends full-width, but aligned them to the top 50% of the printable area.

All of that is to say that once we get enough interest to actually do this, we will make the legends the size that the initial group of buyers want them to be.

So people who sign up for this first batch will get to vote on the final layout before the molds are made.  And I am fine if they are smaller than the prototypes are.

Does that help?
