building a keyboard yourself

So what's the best way to build your own keyboard from parts. i don't mean molding all the plastic and stuff myself. but yknow. something cost effective and fun.

Switches, wire, diodes, teensy (or whatever controller you want to you), and something the mount the switches on.  You could put together a fairly cheap board if you were so inclined with the parts mentioned, especially if you find a cheap medium to mount the switches on.
