[IC] SUGRU
« on: Tue, 19 February 2013, 00:38:23 »
Is anybody interested in masses of SUGRU?

for people who have no idea what SUGRU is

i thought about the case stabilizing mod for the poker. Also it could be used to improve custom/home made cases like the wood case. Making grippy feet for cases. Maybe even keycaps?!

are there more uses for keyboards?

Obviously the only real use for it is novelty caps, just like every other material.

Does Sugru offer GB/mass quantity pricing? If so, I'd be in. I love the stuff. Very very handy around the house.

Sounds really fun/awesome.  I'd love to do some 30 minute sculpting on top of blank keycaps.  :p

So i made a poll to see how many people are intrested.
I will send this poll to sugru, tomorrow or on friday, depending on how many responses we get, to see if they can give us a group buy pricing.

i thought about the case stabilizing mod for the poker

this sounds like a great idea, may be good for feet on the ergo dox too

only thing that worries me is this seems to have a short 6 month shelf life

i think i'm gonna buy the small $10 kit and see how this stuff is

Well the point of a GB is to benefit from large purchasing power.  You haven't shown any benefit yet.

Yup need to contact them and see what they say, then can drive the numbers.

well i wanted to submit the form (with 5 responses up until now) to sugru first so they would take this a bit more serious. if only 5 people buy products, there is no reason for sugru to sell them to us at a lower price and that is the goal, to get a better price.
also this is a interest check, not a group buy, so if i don't get a reasonable amount of responses, there is no point to make it to a group buy.

or am i missing the point?

It's been two days lol

But maybe it's better to contact them first to see what numbers this potential GB will need to hit in order to get better pricing? Any information on price and application of it is good too.

sugru doesn't seem particularly amazing. standard rtv silicone is moldable and will cure at room temperature, although most formulations are more viscous than modeling clay to start with, they are also a lot cheaper. there is also a commonly available low-temperature thermoplastic that, combined with a little bit of rtv silicone, has similar properties (vibration dampening not being one of them though). the trade name that i know of for this is instamorph, also there are others i can't remember as well.

you may be thinking of shapelock which i believe is similar to instamorph.

i like the sugru material for some things but it does have a shelf life so if the GB proceeds i encourage people to think carefully about how much they need and when; i recall something about the shelf life being extendable if it is kept in a fridge or freezer.

So, I just got a email back.

Hi Daniel,

It sounds like you have a great little group there.  We can offer you a discount code of 25% to buy online.
We're just wondering how you would keep the code private so it doesn't go viral? :)

Best wishes

Would it be too annoying to do a group buy where one person orders in bulk using the discount (and them allowing one purchase) and gets everyone's orders?

i wouldn't have a problem with that, but shipping outside conus and large orders would be massive.

let's just see if they can create one-time-use codes :)

ok, i send out the codes right now.

I have no idea when those codes will expire, so use them as soon as possible to get the 25% off.
(there actually is a date on the email..... LOL 03/31/13 (end of march) ) still use them as soon as possible, so maybe there will be more chances.

thanks, very cool

last week i got the smallest packet (3 x 5g) and i just used a single packet to add custom finger molding/grip to my logitech joystick and add "better" feet to my hhkb, we shall see how these work tomorrow once its cured. i want to use it to add rubber stabilizers inside my poker case to keep it from flexing instead of foam like it is now and i'm thinking all sorts of things to do with it on my ergodox and phantom projects

i will say damn this stuff seems to love sticking to finger nails, had to scrub hard to get it off.
