HHKB Pro JP (my daily now), HHKB Pro 2 and a traitor (IBM Modem M industrial)...

I really like rewind's black HHKB with a few colored keycaps... Are these "blank colored" keycaps for the HHKB hard to find?

(Attachment Link)
That black on black HHKB JP looks fantastic! In my extremely limited experience (only had mine a few weeks) it is hard to find blank colored Topre caps... let me know if you find a good source  :p

I have only ever seen white HHKB JP's. I didn't realize they came with a black case too (or did you somehow do a swap)? Either way, it looks good :)

Ah ah thanks to all you guys: I didn't realize that the "otaku" black-on-black HHKB Pro JP wasn't that common here on GH. I'll make more picture of it this summer (when I'll have access to a good DSLR camera).

It is stock: I didn't do any swap. It was bought on amazon.co.jp one year ago (reference is PD-KB420B as far as I can tell) and shipped to Tokyo and then made its way to Europe inside a luggage  :)

(I'll post a question in the keycaps forum regarding availability of replacement Topre keycaps in Japan / Tokyo / Akiba)

Unfortunately, unless you know someone with one, or can get down to EK's showroom in southern California, there's really no way to test drive them.  Take my opinion for a grain of salt, but they are really awesome switches!  :)

AFAIK, there are no switch testers so you have to meet someone who owns it :/
The good thing about these boards is that they don't lose 80% of their value once out of the box, so you can buy one, try it for a couple of weeks and sell it for just a bit cheaper in case you don't like it.

I haven't had any experience with it - but many people here say that you can usually sell your HHKB (or some other topre boards) for a small loss since they are in relatively high demand. You might be down a few dollars but you won't be stuck with a board you hate and now know how Topre feels.

Not really anymore ergonomic than the normal way. Most people (myself included) just enjoy the different feeling it provides.

Usually I'm not a big fan of flipping space bars, but the HHKB space bar has a relatively sharp edge. When you type long sessions (like I do at work) it can really start to hurt. It's a matter of preference, try it out and see if you like it! :)

I ended up flipping my whole bottom row to avoid the sharp edge. But then again my typing style is bad and I usually have my wrists wresting on the table instead of floating. If you type "correctly" then your fingers probably are not hitting the edge, but you can still try it if you want.

Next keyboard I get will be bought by my company as a work hardware request. Asking them to sell it and get a new one because I didn't like it isn't really an option.

Might stick to Cherry MX switches for that next purchase and get a Topre keyboard for home in 6 months or so.

you work for a company that is willing to spend ridiculous amounts of money on what any sane company would deem "just a keyboard" ?

It's a big technology giant and I work developing software that is in mobile phones, televisions, and more. There are loads of prototypes and unreleased products in the office. A lot of "corporate espionage" information running around in the internal private network. The type of thing where millions of revenue are in risk based on beating your competitor to the market and controlling the PR of the new products. Remember the disaster that followed when a Nokia phone prototype got leaked, it got ****ty reviews that didn't consider it being beta and killed the product when it came out.

Security and admins are very paranoid and OCD, which is their job so it is cool. One of their rules blocks us from bringing external hardware into the office. The two things they are most strict about are keyboards and headphones, because they are small, common for people to have their own, and easy to hack to turn them into recording devices. Headphones are easily turned into a microphone and keyboards turned into a keylogger. Obviously cameras are blocked.

It's funny though, all engineers most use a secure Windows, but I am in a special division were we run our own Linux environments (because we build/hack on it). So in theory if I wanted I could have the keylogger in my machine. What I develop is Open Source so I am a bit shielded from this competitive corporate environment. They trust us, and know we will only share public development and information.

The company understands hackers/engineers are very picky about the hardware they use. So I can just ask my manager for anything I need to use for work, and unless completely insane he will make a request and it will be at my desk in a week or two. It is worth spending a few hundred dollars on the comfort of a person that will be more productive and bring the money back quickly.

I also requested a standing desk, a beefy code building server, a second machine to test code in OS X, two big resolution screens... all are expensive. But totally worth it.

A happy employee is a productive employee.

pd: don't want to hihack this thread. If you have any more questions, send me a PM  :D

I have been using emacs as my main editor (and sometimes terminal emulator) for half a decade now. Is there some navigation trick I don't know? HHKB looks more targetted towards vim people with hjkl navigation.

Do you use the FN key all the time to navigate inside/between buffers?

HHKB doesn't use hjkl for navigation. I use Emacs as well as a HHKB every day– works fine. C-n/p/f/b, etc.

No, I meant vim power users don't use arrow keys to begin with. So in HHKB they use the usual hjkl for navigation.

I never got used to C-n/p/f/b in emacs. The four keys feel very far away from each other and not in a logically placed cluster like the arrow keys. Most of emacs keybindings are based on the first letter of what they do. Easier to remember but harder on your fingers. I have rebinded most of mine  :D

Similar to this but not the same: http://ergoemacs.org/emacs/ergonomic_emacs_keybinding.html

Same here. The default Emacs keybindings make zero sense whatsoever (and are probably responsible for quite some RSIs). But then Emacs is fully programmable so I made myself "saner" Emacs keybindings. I don't know about that "ergo emacs" thing but I'm also using modifier+{i,j,k,l} to move the cursor because it's IMHO so much better than anything else (it even beats vim's default hjkl). I do also use ace-jump-mode (easymotion under vim) because there's simply no faster way to move the cursor on screen when your cursor's destination is more than a few chars / line away :)

Nothing fancy today. Found 3 brother typewriters with Topre compatible keycaps at the thrift store, so I picked them up. The color actually matches really well with the FC660C stock keycaps.

Didn't know about ace-jump-mode. Very cool. Will add it to my arsenal. Thanks  :thumb:
