Which realforce?
« on: Wed, 27 February 2013, 09:00:39 »
I'm wondering what's everyone's opinion...

I would use this keyboard both for gaming and typing / programming. (Would prefer the quietest I can get).

Do I need to look at the 55g uniform or the silent? 87 Black.

Silent if you want the quietest.

I probably shouldn't have typed that.

How would you compare them sound wise with browns?

Quieter than browns, most definitely.

Quieter than most rubber domes, honestly.

55g, unless you have weak 6 year old girl hands.  I was underwhelmed by regular Topre, but 55g gives a major bon nerr due to awesomeness.

I've got a 55g uniform.

Honestly very quiet, quieter than most of my Cherry boards. Maybe my RACE (no plate) with reds switches and o-rings may be quieter?

The sound it does have is quite a satisfying 'thock'. I am happy I didn't get the silent version now.

The silencing is on the upstroke. The thock sound on the downstoke is the same in the silent version.

Lol, I preferred lighter boards until I got the 55g. Liked that thing so much I was tempted to get another 55g, but the curiosity of trying the lighter Topres was just digging at my skull. Pulled the trigger on a Type-S just now  :)

I just replaced the E switch on my poker and went ahead and put o-rings on it. (Need PBT switches - as I've grown used to the feel of PBT and POM keys for the last 3 months).

And I was thoroughly surprised with how quiet black switches + o-rings really are. And the fact that the o-rings don't hinder me like they did on a cherry mx blue.

Lol, I preferred lighter boards until I got the 55g. Liked that thing so much I was tempted to get another 55g, but the curiosity of trying the lighter Topres was just digging at my skull. Pulled the trigger on a Type-S just now  :)

I kinda want to get a 45g uniform, simply because I like the lightness of my cherry mx reds -> and if I really do learn to love torpe, then it will be my main keyboard for my desk.... so I'd like to get it right on the first try. :(

But thanks for the info, I was aware the silencing was for the upstroke -> I'll keep that in mind. I'm still contemplating getting  full sized, which would be variable weight.

Additionally, how are they silenced? Is it similar to the o-ring modification underneath the topre switch itself?

main reason i like my realforce keyboard is that it's 45g. it stands further from usual rubber dome keyboards because it is much lighter.

mmmm not really. o2dazone posted a video on the difference in sound between silenced, and non-silenced HHKB's. It's pretty drastic.

I am easily distracted. I don't want anybody to distract me with noises. That goes both ways - I don't wanna be all clackety clack at work when typing. A guy in his cubicle down the hall uses cherry blues now (QFR), he just doesn't care what people think - I actually got him into the world of mechanical keyboards lol. It also helps that he's Lead Developer... nobody can really tell him anything about his keyboard either way.

On the other hand I'm too lazy to open up a keyboard to mod it  :))

Exactly. Not sure why so many hate on the Type-S. Yeah, it's expensive, but I'm really enjoying mine and I'm glad I made the purchase. $100 is more than worth the time it would've taken to do the mods myself.

Don't get me wrong, my 45g is still a great board, but it's NOTHING compared to the 55g if you have heavy fingers.  I rate the 45g barely above a Cherry Brown, and certainly not worth the premium, whereas the 55g is worth every penny.  I don't even want to think about how much I would hate the 30g.

for those with light fingers, 45g boards are very nice. where on earth could you get a rubber dome board that light?  :p and i can't buy a new 55g anyways. it seems such boards are sold solely by ek, which doesn't ship to russia.

It's all good! Happy to see more Topre users, regardless.

My point though wasn't to say that the Type-S isn't that big of a difference, which it is, but more so that the HHKB is already super quiet compared to most boards, so I always wonder at the motivation to drop $130 for even MORE quiet.

But then again, I used to think it was crazy to drop more than $100 on a keyboard, and here I am with 3 boards that I paid around $300 a pop for. lol

HHKB all the way!

I was debating the same thing 2 weeks ago with a friend, he ended getting the realforce I got the hhkb. After playing with the realforce and my hhkb I could not be happier with my purchase. If I were to buy another topre board I would go with another hhkb, the white version so I can swap keys  ;D

I personally think the arrow keys are just fine, obviously not as convenient as having dedicated arrows but once you get used to using fn I find the arrow placement to be ideal. If however you are constantly using arrow keys for work / projects and have been for a long time I can see how the process of learning fn+arrow can be a pain.

No, I'm saying that with my work schedule and over a decade of muscle memory using the arrows + ins/del cluster it's not really feasible at this time for me to make the switch full time.

Hey Daerid...you should start a Topre tour with one of your boards!

Sounds like it's time sell the HHKB.

Hell no. I'm willing this thing to my kid, god damnit.

Lol.

On the HHKB note, would you suggest getting printed over non-printed?

If you're not used to it, definitely. I still glance at it occasionally when trying to get the page up/down and home/end right.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.
