hard landing pads to shorten keypress distance?
« on: Fri, 29 March 2013, 08:39:40 »
Hi there,

I'm thinking about some alternatives to the landing pads that are sold by elitekeyboards.

I have a set of the gray "firm" landing pads, and after using them I realized that I enjoyed the shortened travel distance, but disliked the lack of a defined tactile stop of bottoming out.

Is there any other way of reducing the key travel by maybe putting a similar wedge of hard plastic or other material underneath?
The switch type in question is the cherry mx brown btw.

I did some searches to try and find similar questions but to no avail. Hope this isn't a frequently covered question.

Thanks in advance for any input you have :)

You can use some O-Rings. There are many discussions on these, but if you do not want to change they feeling of bottoming out too much, I would recommend using some 70A O-rings (70A refers to the hardness or whatever it is called).

Personally, I bought some 70A o-rings on amazon for a little less than 2$ for a bag of 100. Many people say they prefer 40A or 50A o-rings, but I like my 70A a lot, still I cannot compare since they are the only ones I ever used. I also tried the 3/32, but the travel reduction was too much for me.

Here's a link to a topic with a lot on info on the different sizes available:

thank you very much for the suggestion.

How hard would you say they are compared to the actual bottoming out of an unmodified stem?

From your description, it sounds like O-rings are exactly what you are looking for. The landing pad experience is different. I like rings on blues and pads on blacks, for example.

There are different sizes (which determine how much shorter travel distance) and hardnesses (which determines the crispness or cushioning at the bottom).

You might want to start by trying thicker, harder ones.

Note also that different "styles" of caps may be taller or shorter, and that sometimes you might have to stack multiples of the smaller rings.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.

Thank you very much for your insight. The keys and key caps in this case are the stock keys of a noppoo mini and a key cool 84

Are keycaps on the keycool taller?

I would say that they just absorb a very little of the impact, so it still fells like a "thunk" but just a little less hard. Honnestly, before getting my o-rings, I was very satisfied with the felling of the bottom out and didn't want to change it, but I still got some o-rings to reduce the noise at job. And since I wanted to change the feeling the less I could hat's why I went for 70A o-rings (and they were cheap). And when I tried them, I realised that the feeling got even better. Still feeling solid when I bottom out, yet just a tad less hard.

Anyway, if you are in US (I ain't), these o-rings will be very cheap. For me, to add 10$ shipping was a consideration so I waited until I needed something else :)

****, I'm an American but I  live in Norway at the moment.

How on earth could shipping be $10? that's just theft...
