[WTB] Desoldering Iron or pump for cheap.
« on: Mon, 15 April 2013, 23:23:56 »
As posted in the subject, I would like to buy a desoldering iron that someone is willing to let go for cheap. Maybe a desoldering pump someone wants to donate? Lol. Please PM me or leave a message here to help a fella :D Thanks!

Ahahahahaha! GLWB :)

Heehee~ I got my hands on a free shorted out Blackwidow and the bloody desoldering braid ain't sucking up none of that damn solder... *sigh* It makes me wonder is it the damn desoldering braid or is it the solder that's on this keyboard. I even used extra flux and nothing. Someone help me out here :P

a simple one should work

Mmm~ I saw the pumps on Amazon and yeah, some of them seem suspicious. Reading a lot about easily breaking plastic parts in those pumps. I shall change my topic into desoldering iron only. Thanks for the input, dood :)

They break more often than something like a Hakko 808, but cost like 5 bucks. The Hakko will run you 200 bucks. Probably well worth it if you plan to desolder a lot and have the money, but you can go ahead and get a pump for the time being.

I saw the Hakko 808 but I won't ever be using that enough to let it pay itself off. Pump eh... Maybe I'll just get the pump *sigh* Anyone want to tell me if the desoldering iron is worth the extra $10 over the pump???

I hear good things about the edsyn soldapult in comparison to the generic suckers in the market. Haven't tried one, but that's the one I'll get if I'm not looking at the 808.

you could also use a $20 radioshack desoldering iron. soemthing like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00068IJSG/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p60_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0M35SG653CMZ5QKD404X&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846

generally the more expensive ones have a higher vaccum which means that they "suck" (haha get it?) more. which is needed when you have to remove solder from smaller holes.

Hmmm, it does seem that everyone that posted in here do prefer the pumps over the desoldering irons. I guess I'll invest into a pump but keep this thread open for now to see some discussion or maybe even an offer. The Edysyn one's do seem quite adequate but I don't know if I want to spend over $15-20 for one :P I'll probably only use it to mod one or two keyboards. I'm currently using my friend's soldering kit but if I was to make modding keyboards a frequent hobby, I'd definitely pick up the Hakko 888 :D

If you want to buy an Edsyn Soldapullt, I recommend calling Edsyn directly and ordering it from them. I fear that some of those on Amazon/eBay are knockoffs.

Thank you for this information. Will make sure to do that.

I'm only planning on modding 1-2 keyboards. Would you recommend the $30-40 Edsyn Soldapullt's or just one of the $5-6 Amico ones?
Do the Edsyn Soldapullt's have any resell value around here?

The DS017 model, "The Original" Deluxe SOLDAPULLT, retails for onlt $19.40 direct from Edsyn, plus shipping. Sometimes their customer service will quote you a better price than is listed on the website, you just tell them the model number you want, and they will give you the price.

And yes, a Soldapullt that was only used for desoldering 1-2 boards should have a decent resale value. You would probably only lose 10-20% on the resale.

I got the Edsyn US140 at Fry's after using a cheapo eBay sucker for 3 or 4 boards. The Edsyn works better, and has replaceable parts. It was under $15 with tax.

I'll add my support to Edsyn - they take a bit of skill to use, but there are very effective, use no consumables and last forever (10+ years on the one I'm using now).

Thank you for the very specific information! :D I am now 99% sure I'm going to be purchasing a Edsyn Soldapullt with these answers. Just need to decide the Deluxe or the smaller and cheaper one khaangaaroo advised. But I'm currently not too scared to buy the Deluxe one now because you tell me the resell value is fairly good.

Anyone have experience with both and can give me their preference?

I got the Edsyn US140 at Fry's after using a cheapo eBay sucker for 3 or 4 boards. The Edsyn works better, and has replaceable parts. It was under $15 with tax.

OO! That one is a lot cheaper but still Edsyn! I think I might be in for that one! As much as I'd like to get the fullsize ones, they are either double or over double the price. How has your experience with that small one been? Have you ever tried sucking solder out of a tiny component like for LED's? I feel like I'll have no choice but to use wick for the small ones though.

PS - still major regret for not buying that desoldering iron with extra tips from you for $8.00 way back when. If only I saw it earlier  :'( LOL!

Get a soldapult may vnot be the quickest but it very effective.

I personally think the Edsyn US140 is average-sized, and the full-sized Edsyns are over-sized...haha. I like that I can easily reach and depress the plunger with my thumb without having to change my grip.

After desoldering the first joint, I can clear out the tip and reset the plunger in the time the second joint is melted enough be be sucked. It's pretty fast once you get the technique down. I usually stop after every 5 switches to tap on the sucker, loosen excess solder inside the tube, and clear it out completely into a bin... or else it'll accumulate and start falling out as you work.

It works fine for LEDs too. I barely ever use a wick anymore.

Some photos to give an idea of size:

Thanks a lot for the in depth description and pics! Your instructions on how you use it actually help a lot too because I'll probably have ended up asking how you use your's after I have received mine later. I'm sold. I'm going to order one of these today for sure, and I'll be sure to order through their official site. The thing isn't as ugly as I thought either. LOL!

I can vouch for the radioshack desolder iron.  It's quick and effective but you go through tips pretty quickly - 1 tip per full sized board in my experience...fortunately, they are only $2 each so if you do try it, get 1-2 extra tips.  I still use braid on some joints, but this is a breeze for cherry switches.

I have a desoldering iron, solder iron, and a thing of lube and some paint brushes you can have for the price of shipping, I'll also include a little bottle of Victorinox for the springs.

I call it a "Starters Keyboard DIY Kit". PM me if you are interested.

I've tried the radioshack desoldering iron too. It's not bad. The tips should last more than one keyboard though. Mine still seemed like new after two TKL boards. It might depend on how frequently you blow out the old solder. Maybe tinning the tip and cleaning it as you would a regular soldering iron will help it last longer too.

For me, I was slower with the radioshack desoldering iron than I was with a solder sucker. It seemed like it took longer to melt the existing solder, only by a few seconds, but it adds up when you have to do so many switches. I would rank my desoldering preferences:

1 - temp controlled soldering station + Edsyn solder sucker
2 - temp controlled soldering station + cheap solder sucker
3 - cheap soldering iron + Edsyn solder sucker   OR   radioshack desoldering iron
4 - cheap soldering iron + cheap solder sucker

Yeah, this seemed like the general consensus. Seeing that I'm still fairly new to the soldering/desoldering thing, I guess the best way for me to figure out which way works best is for me to try them out. If Gupgup really does really go through with his last message, I might end up still buying that Edsyn too so I can try out both methods and see which is best. But oh man, I can't wait for Gupgup to message me back. LOL! He would literally be supplying a soldering nooby like me with everything I need right off the bat!

EDIT: LOL! So you were the one that bought the desoldering iron tips from khaangaaroo LOL!

Yeah try em all. Once you figure out what you like, you can pass on what you don't use. Everyone's doing it...haha

I might want to borrow that in the fall (j/k). Might be moving to Orlando (not j/k) :)

Well Jocelyn, you are free to borrow it for sure, and you know it :) (no j/k). Why the move to Orlando?

Seems like it :P This modding business seemed like something only specialists were doing when I first joined this community but it's surprisingly fun and simple. The obvious and largest obstacle is money  :))

Because my partner (Morgan AKA Nezumi) has still not heard from U of Hawaii, and University of Victoria offered her a stipend, but doesn't cover tuition. It's kind of an unexpected turn of events lol
Oh yeah, and Florida is CHEAP and easy to move to  :p

PS - Please don't turn this into UF vs. UCF. UCF is ranked 13th in physics PhD program :)

Hahaha! I may be a Gator but I don't have anything against UCF :P I've surprisingly comes across and had the pleasure of communicating with Seminoles and Golden Knights on here too. Never expected to find fellow Floridians to be indulged in the same hobby as mine. Maybe we might even be able to organize a Florida meetup sometime in the future! Lol!

Yes, I remember seeing a few of you in FL being like "Wow, you're in florida, too?, etc", but forget which thread that was. I'm sure there will be a meetup, but wait until the Summer lol

If you want to buy an Edsyn Soldapullt, I recommend calling Edsyn directly and ordering it from them. I fear that some of those on Amazon/eBay are knockoffs.

Which email to email? There are so many?! :))

I would probably be down :P I just wouldn't have much to contribute/show :))

Little bonus he said. DAT DUCKY KEYCAP KEYCHAIN! Thank you, Gupgup! You the man, good sir! I've always wanted one and now I have it in the exact switch I wanted :D

I'm definitely going to be having fun tonight playing around with these new goodies. Still need to purchase the Edsyn but I'll test this iron first to see if necessary, especially for those LED's.

Great to see it arrived, and no problem my friend. Glad you like the keychain :D

The desolder pump is sketchy to me, sometimes it works and sometimes it burns the PCB :/ so be really careful and only keep on pad for like 1 or 2 seconds while wiggling back and forth.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

That's nice of you, gupgup. Did you give your stuff to him because you upgraded, or are you tired of tedious keyboard modding now? haha

haha! I've upgraded to a Hakko 888 a while back and a edsyn desoldering pump. Switched to the krytox 103 and 205 combo also.

Far from tired my friend, just getting started ;D

Is this Super Lube what I would use on the springs??? If so, how would I apply? with the brush or just dip the spring? LOL! I'm assuming brush because from what I'm seeing of the Super Lube consistency, dipping it would cause a mess :P
