It is as natural as taking and using your own mug.  Haven't you ever been in a loo and seen people 'go' and then not even wash their hands on the way out? Would you want to share the same keyboard as these people?

I'm getting a Topre Type Heaven for work this winter.  For my winter job I'm the office accountant, HR guy, and I end up doing a ****load of data entry; the provided Dell rubber dome took a noticeable toll on my wrists and fingers last winter.

I would love to bring an HHKB and number pad, but I can't picture the ski and snowboard instructors letting me get away with going that far, lol.

Funny that you mention this.

The company I work for (boeing) uses the same keyboard but with a badge reader. I just recently started working here in June and I've been bringing my keyboard everday. I have 3 keyboards which I cycle between: Ducky Shine 2 (mx reds), Poker II (reds), and my Leopold FC660C (topre). I got my co-workers interested in keyboards as a result and hope to get them into potentially buying one in the future! (they got me into cycling, hopefully I can get them into fine typing ;))

It's not a job but I think it applies. I've brought my board to school before. I got a lot of stares and why the hell would you spends $150 for a keyboard!
I just ignore it. First I asked the teachers if it was too load, they all said no since it was for lecture notes. And thn I got a lecture on lectures... And how it's important to be quick. All except one teacher really cared he was around when computers still had to use paper rolls to send data. He has an old IBM model something? Stashed on his classroom. I was happy and gave friendly advice on all this to my friends since they all had questions and some are stubborn to believe it makes a difference.  A lot of people really liked the look of the shine space bar and the type of board that looks like a giant company gave some weird scheme for how it's shaped.

I bring my HHKB to my internship at a law firm. A few of my friends there have commented that they think its "cool" that I can type on blank keys. I wouldn't be surprised if they thought I was weird; but they just offered me a part time paying job while I finish my last semester of school; so it must not have affected their opinion of me too negatively :)

I like it that this topic is still alive :)
I was not sure whether this need is just some ... geekiness or real.
I just pressed a few keys on my other keyboard here at work, which is a standard lenovo something crap, I didn't actually use it since weeks (connected to a test machine).
Man my fingers really hated me. That mushyness (is that a word?), and it's harder to press keys down than on this mx brown keyboard I use daily. And it feels like keys got different resistance (although it's a pretty new keyboard I typed maybe a total of half hour on it). And I'm not quite sure when is the key bottomed out (or made contact) since resistance grows when I press them down. It's no wonder I got used to bottom out hard on keyboards. My touch is still relatively heavy but it got way way lighter and more comfortable since I use mechanical.

Yes dudes unless you got real weird colleagues or employer do use your own keyboard, I'm sure it's better for 99,99% of jobs out there, unless you belong to the lucky few where they buy you the keyboard you want.

I definitely need to get a cheap kvm so I don't need to touch that disgusting thing again.

I was interning at a law firm before they hired me (part time until I finish school this semester). I've been bringing my HHKB everyday since I started. I'll continue to do this until I get my Realforce 87U silent (white/gray) or HHKB Type S dedicated for the office.

I'm so sick of seeing both of them out of stock on elitekeyboards.com. They say November is the restock date... I wish they'd hurry up!

I bring my FC660C to work. It is pretty quiet, and doesn't sound all that different from a regular rubber dome board. My boss saw it and asked if I wanted him to get me a better keyboard...

AuRinBei, maybe he's asking if you want the company to get one, so you don't have to bring in your own? I know for the people who tote their boards back and forth, it would be nice to have one where you can leave at work. Right now I have things so I can leave my main board at work, since that is where I need it the most, and it is nice to not lug it back and forth.

No, he thought the company gave it to me. He just thought it sucked because it was so small. I should have taken him up on his offer though. Imagine if he actually did bring me a better keyboard.

I brought my IBM M to work when I had to work on a project that required a lot of intense keyboarding.  When I got into the meat of it, there was so much clacking from the probably 200wpm (I was just hitting ctrl-tab and page down so it was pretty easy to get really fast), that people in adjacent cubicles where asking what was I working on, expecting my hands to be on fire.

No one cared about my IBM M, so I didn't mind leaving it there.  But the day I quit work, it was the first thing I unplugged. ;)

I was using my CM Storm XT w/ Browns for a few weeks. Then I came across a great deal on a white RealForce 87U all 45g. Brought it to work and I'm never looking back (although I have a black 87U 55g in the mail  :-X). I love this keyboard for work.

I had MX blue at work - no-one complained.  Someone else is borrowing that keyboard now, while I switched to black.  I actually like the clicking sound when I can hear him typing in the background.

I am getting QFR with MX green soon, with the intention of taking it in to work :)

Depends where you work, I guess.

Have any of you ever been denied use of a personal keyboard on the grounds of a "security policy"? I worked at one place that didnt allow the use of USB devices. Im pretty sure they even went as far as to epoxy the ports shut. I wonder how common that is.

oh and have any of you guys who take your boards home after work had trouble with security hassling you about stealing company property?

I have heard of a few places that epoxy USB ports shut. Thats the lazy way. Other places I know of have disabled the ports either via the BIOS if that supported doing it, or in the OS itself.

I am lucky enough that where I work, they're really not picky about things. I am quite happy that they let me use what ever keyboard I want. Hell, they're cool with me using the OS of my choice (This system is running Debian Sid, and we have other people around here running CentOS, Fedora, MacOS X, etc). Plus I am pretty tickled, because when I swapped desks, I just inherited an IBM Selectric II.

Kinda on topic, One placed I worked at completely swindled me ( and several others )

During the interview and hireing process, they showed us nice private offices complete with top of the line computer systems, promising we could bring in our own hardware or they would provide requested hardware for us. ( I ALWAYS ask if we can bring in personal hardware ) etc.

When I showed up on my first monday asking the boss where my desk is, he quickly escorted me to another building that was never mentioned during the interview/tour and I found my self hot-seating at a plastic fold out table, metal fold out chairs, in an normal sized personal office space with about 6 other people. All hardware was locked down, usb ports disabled, no internet, no start menu, basically every bad thing you could think of, 10 hour shifts with 30min lunches (no eating area, so you either drove to the nearest fast food place and ate in the car on the way back or brought a cold lunch ) and terrible pay. Hot seating was the worst, imagine showing up to work on a dell keyboard and mouse that was covered in syrup and food and crumbs from the morning shift guy. I couldn't use my own mouse because they woudn't let me install the required software. It was the worst place I've ever worked. I no joke tried to get fired from that place, I would watch netflix on my phone ( whole seasons of shows ) and do the minimal required amount of work.

I couln't see myself taking a job anymore unless I 100% know i'm allowed to bring in my own computer items. I cant go back to rubber domes, cheap mice, cheap chairs and 1080p screens.

Turns out the owner runs a temp agency buisness as well, and hired me under that so that basically he didn't have to offer us insurance benifits, etc, and only had about 10 or so real workers there.

I later ended up walking out and kept all the files i was working on without leaving them a copy. Didnt give a heads up, just walked off and a few days later when they called i told them about my new job I was working at.

Good. I would have done the same. That guy and others like him deserve a lot worse. Leeches of society.

I bring my Matias to work.  Its one of the reasons I bought it, its quiet but nicely tactile so I can type fast on it.  I had the Type Heaven at work but brought it back home, I think I type nearly as much as home and wanted it there.  I may alternate back and forth when bored.

All my coworkers look at me funny but they seem happy with their chicklet laptops or cheap RD boards.

Yeah, pretty much baited in college aged kids with apperances of nice offices, good pay, and then suckered them in.

And I'm sure it varies by state, but being temp agency workers ( which basically we all were ) means no holiday pay, no insurance, benifits, etc. so on holdays we would all be working, and then once the word got out that the few real workers got bonus's and insentives, a few people got up and left. I would have left sooner, but I had to keep a roof over my head, and the pay barely did that. Everytime someone new came in ( often with the turn over rate ) we would basically laugh them off when they told everyone that they were just at the fold out table till their office space was ready.

rant over.

Back on topic, no one has ever questioned my mx reds at work, but not even an hour to using my blues a co-worker popped her head around the corner and asked "whats wrong with your keyboard?" Ended up ditching blues all together in favor or linear switches due to the blues double tap problems.

I recently acquired an internship in the IS field at a large private corporation and am currently using this garbage keyboard:
More
Show Image

Since I'm just an intern I'm still going through training and not really contributing much so I don't feel like I'm a real part of "the team" yet. Would it be weird for me to bring in my own keyboard? No one in my department has brought in their own keyboard, they're all using the corporate assigned Dell L100. I work full time at this corporation.

I'm using that same Dell rubber dome at my work too. Hi5 :P

I'd Hi5 for twinsies, but never for a rubber dome. Especially a dumbdelldome...

Yeah, had one of those that I used for about 6 months at my current job. About that point, the keyboard started having ghosting problems, and I said screw it because I had paid enough bills off that I could start getting back in to the hobby and afford a spare to use at work. Now I have a Model M and a XT Model F on my desk, and not looking back.

Our new apprentice only lasted a few days — I wonder if he was put off by being given a (sort-of) blue Alps keyboard :) Maybe he took offence to how many of the switches are still black Alps and don't click … The horror. (Hey, I could have given him the Oriental Tech OK-100M)

That's crazy about epoxying them shut.  What idiots.  Just pull the header off the motherboard--that's what I do, and disable the rear ones in bios.

My wife can't have her personal phone on at work, but they gave her a work phone.  I know a lot of 'secure' jobs require nothing personal brought in or out.  Even on movie sets you can't have a cell phone for security reasons.

An anecdote from the opposite perspective: One of our clients runs a chemical plant, and has portable phones on site that are tied to a base station.  They work wirelessly, but only when paired with the specific base station.  Everyone is told not to take the phones home, but people still do.  Obviously they wouldn't work, so I guess sheepish employees sneak their phones back in the next day.

Not all BIOS will allow you to disable onboard ones. Dell are extremely common, yet have very limited options in their BIOS, and quite a few don't have otpions to disable USB ports.

Until Congress passes the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/11/07/senate-poised-to-pass-gay-rights-bill-barring-workplace-discrimination/, you should NOT bring your own keyboard to work.

In all seriousness, if you live in one of the 31 states where it's legal to discriminate against gay people, you can be fired if your boss suspects you are gay.  Not that you are gay, but just suspects you are gay.  Fired.  No more job.  Even if you love kitties more than Michael Douglas.  So, for your own protection, DO NOT bring any pink, purple, lime green or other brightly colored keyboards to work.  Do not bring any small keyboards, for fear that they may be deemed too "effeminate".   Do not bring any fancy keyboards to work, for fear that they may be deemed too "fabulous".

Please be ever mindful, every day, and every minute that you may get fired if either you or your keyboard looks ever so slightly "gay" or even "bi-curious".  Other good advice to you people living in those red states is do not wear colorful clothing, or make eye contact with other people of the same sex.  Do not laugh too loudly, in fact don't laugh at all.  And whatever you do, if you're a man, do not dance.  Never.  Dance.  No.  Not even a jig or a shuffle.  Also don't sing, cry, hug, or run with you arms out like Johnny Depp in that gay pirate movie, no matter how much fun it is.  Please, for your family, fear for your job.

However, if you ever get fed up with living in fear, move to a blue state.  Or better yet, tell your elected representative in your red state to pass ENDA, so you will no longer have to hide your keyboard in a closet.  You can bring that pink and purple keyboard to work with pride.  A rainbow of pride.

Yesterday I brought a new KBT Pure Pro and a Deck Francium at the office.

While I'm toying with the KBT 60, the Francium was just there doing nothing. A colleague saw  the Francium and was curious about it.

I gave it to her for a test run. She was happy :-)

Have any of you ever been denied use of a personal keyboard on the grounds of a "security policy"? I worked at one place that didnt allow the use of USB devices.

I have been told I can't bring a personal keyboard to work. I had a conversation with one of the managers about it and they said the keyboard can't have USB ports due to a "hidden USB" risk. I'm tempted to take my Ergodox once I get a carrying case for it, since it's got in a clear case and doesn't have any USB ports I think they should let me use it. ;)

I keep about 10 keyboards at work, seems normal to me.

I have about the same....but my coworkers are using them because some are to cheap to buy their own.

I've even customized some keyboards for some coworkers.
Wait you let them all use your keyboards ? What if they take home and never give it back ? I would hate to have a board stolen :(

You're selfless and thus you think everyone else is too and that they will steal your ****. Most people aren't that way like you.

Merely thinking that someone will still your stuff means that you think everyone is evil and will steal your stuff.

I wouldn't steal anybodys stuff cuz i know how bad that would feel. I'm just saying sometimes it happens and the world we live in its not a utopia. Oh and its not being "selfless" its just looking at how it its in the real world. And i'm not as you put it "Most people aren't that way like you" ahahah Shut up dude, You  don't even know me

Just take a look at nearly all democratically elected governments. People are evil... Actually, maybe we're only stupid. You know, Hanlon's razor.

Well, most people don't have plastic skulls on their keyboards.

I don't think it's gay, perhaps a bit feminine, but whatever... How comfortable is it to press a skull though?

Wouldn't the teensy be an issue? I mean, it could be a keylogger or something.

A lot of companies have standardised builds, processes and compliance requirements.  Example, if you work at a bank you will not be allowed to plug any usb thing into your terminal in case you steal some personal data or introduce some virus whilst the senior traders are buy gambling away your savings and your grandma's pension funds on the speculative whim of the day so they can go home to their fat bonuses, crack cocaine and high class escorts.  On the other hand if you work for the US ministry of defence or secret services you can back up decades of state secrets onto flash drives so you can upload them to wikileaks or hand them over to journalists.  You can't do that in Iran, but you are allowed to download w4r3z and browse pr0n if you work for the nuclear agencies although the dancing stripper app you just downloaded may be a trojan that uploads some malware to the firmware of your centrifuges you use to enrich your uranium with.

Sarcasm aside a lot of (big) companies have very restrictive policies and arguing with the idiots from internal IT (a suited ITIL bunch of 'managers' with all the labour outsourced to a 'service des' in mumbai or manilla) is a lost battle.  It ay be easier to get the company to buy you a kinesis or something like that on rsi grouds.

yeah i know plenty of places in my industry that wont let you bring your own keyboard and/or mouse--some will make special purchases through their vendors for ergonomic reasons but i doubt any would special order lets say a filco or realforce and because they would go through their vendor its doubtful you could even get something like a TEK or Kinesis--i think CDW sells Kinesis but not many others do.

For now my company lets us get away with it as long as they inspect it first and luckily i work from my home now.

Its sad to think that i would maybe decline a job offer from a place that wouldn't allow me to bring my own keyboard and trackball.
