CaptainBadAss' Keycap and Switch Test Tour
« on: Mon, 03 June 2013, 22:06:50 »
Edit on 6/1/14: This thread has been locked due to the lack of interest in a future tour.

UPDATE: YES THE ORIGINAL TOUR IS MISSING BUT I HAVE A NEW SOLUTION. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF MY SOLUTIONS BY REPLYING TO THIS POST. THANKS!

It's time! I'm done teasing this. No more Interest Checks and talking about it. It's happening, I'm making moves finally.

This is my Keycap and Switch test tour. You can try a variety of keycaps AND switches.

Ever wanted to try Alps, Topre, Buckling Spring, and MX switches all in one shot? You can do that. Scroll down for more info!

Tired of hearing the debate between PBT and ABS caps? Want to know for yourself what the difference between thick and thin caps are? Here's your chance to find out. I've managed to accumulate the following caps which will be put onto a Tipro 4x8 Matrix board. It has plate-mounted MX Blacks:

  • Thin ABS: Number row profile, stock Poker caps (Thanks for the donation from Lastpilot!)
  • Thick ABS: asdf row, Cherry Doubleshot caps (Thanks for the donation Mashby!)
  • Thin PBT: qwer row, stock Vortex caps (Thanks for the donation Mashby!)
  • Thick PBT: Escape/Function row, imsto caps (Thanks for the donation from Lastpilot!)
  • 2 Tipro relegendables (Thanks for the donation The_Beast!)
  • Zinc Cap (Thanks unnamed friend!)
  • Wario PBT Doubleshot
  • Thin ABS in DSA profile (Thanks for the donation ray4jc!)
  • 4 POM Caps (Thanks for the donation Dorkvader!)
  • BunnyCap (Thanks for the donation ray4jc!)
  • SP Gamer Set (Thanks for the donation ray4jc!)
  • SA Profile Caps (Thanks for the donation ray4jc!)

I also have a Mr. Interface Switch Try Bag. This bag has loose Cherry MX switches (Blue, Brown, Black, White, Clear), Alps (Click and Tactile White, Black, Salmon, etc), a Topre keychain, a Buckling Spring keychain, and some other rare switches (Acer, Futaba, Cherry ML). It's got most of the switches available....except I didn't get a Green or Ghetto Green. Sorry to anyone who was looking forward to trying these. If you ever wanted to try a whole bunch of switches, this is how to do it. Yes they are loose single switches but unless you go to a meet, it'll be hard to get this variety anywhere else.

TheFlyingRaccoon has graciously added a Hall Effect Switch to the "Other" bag. You'll know what I mean when you get the stuff.

ray4jc has added an MX Linear Grey, Matias Quiet, and Matias Clicky switch.

Rules (These are borrowed from AKIMbO's AT F tour)
Only members who have 100+ posts and I deem trustworthy are allowed to participate.

  • You get one week with the Tipro and switches...then you must mail it (with tracking) to the next individual on the list. Everything will fit into a USPS small flat-rate box (Cost = $5.85). Apparently there is a new box with the shipping cost around $8. Please try and package it exactly like I did so the next person on the list will have the same chance you do to play with everything.
  • You must post your thoughts on the switches and caps. Even if its your top three favorite and least three favorite switches.
  • Tour is CONUS only
  • Please PM me and the person you're sending the package a tracking number. If you could post a picture in this thread of the stuff, that'd be amazing as well

Post your interest here. I'll add you to the list if you meet my requirements. The trust thing is there because most of the stuff on this tour is borrowed and I need to return everything eventually. I haven't decided on whether or not I'm going to keep this tour running or if I'm going to do rounds. Let me know what you guys think.

I forgot to say this before but Mashby has also suggested that we send out 37/Alpha sets for people to test out. I'd have to ask him and he'd be handling the sets. if there is interest in this, please let me know as well.

Tour FAQs

Which keys are where on the Tipro?

I'm forgot what I tried in the Mr. Interface Try Bag; Help me remember?

You can check out Mr. Interface's article here or my review on the bag here.

Mini Review on Keycap Types

PBT DSA: These feel like they have a sandy texture. They are angled towards my fingers which feel weird because the GMK caps I’m typing on are angled up, almost parallel to the base of the board. I’ve never used a DSA  profile cap and the one that I put on my escape key felt so foreign to me.

ABS DSA: These are smoother than the PBT caps. Same angled issue as before though.

Thin ABS:  Even though these aren’t SP thin ABS, they feel exactly the same. Light and smooth and barely louder than the rest of the caps. Not bad but I might just be very used to them since I have 3 sets of SP ABS.

Thin PBT:  Not at textured as the PBT DSA caps but still a bit sandy. They feel thinner than the thin ABS caps. Not my favorite.

Thick PBT:  The smoothest PBT cap. These are actually my favorite PBT caps. They feel like there’s something substantial to press down on and they don’t get dirty easily (I have a set of imsto Cherry replica caps that I’ve typed on for a few months.) The texture is nice too since I prefer the smooth caps.

Thick ABS:  These are my favorite caps. The profile is nice, they’re smooth, and the legends are nice. The still feel very substantial to type on but don’t have the texture in PBT that I don’t like. Plus the profile is very nice. The only thing that annoys me is the scoops.  I’m extremely used to nips and the scoops make it hard for me to locate my hands sometimes.

Relegendables:   They feel like ABS to me and are very smooth. Plus they look cool.

Doubleshot PBT:  Same as the PBT caps above it but it looks really sharp.

Zinc:  Cold to the touch but warms up fast. VERY substantial, it almost changes how the switch feels.  There is a ton of wobble in the cap.  The cap almost suctions to me hands. It’s not bad and it felt nice when I tried the Full Metal Filco.

I can't read, did you mention what switches were in the tipro board?

Does Iowa still qualify as CONUS?

CONUS = Contiguous United States AKA the Lower 48 States. So yes, Iowa is part of CONUS and no, you're not too late to sign up.

Tour is CONUS only
:'(

Tibro! I brought the Switch Try Bag to the Chicago meet! But if you're interested in trying anything out, we can work something out when the tour is over.

Or are you just sad you're leaving CONUS? :(

No I'm still exited to go, I have tried the switch bag, but I did want to try out the keycap differences.
On second thought, one more reason you need to do a Eurotour!

Isn't it still the flat rate to ship from or to a base?

Smallfry if you are military stationed overseas with an APO of an FPO address i do believe it is still different shipping rates.  I never actually had to send anything to an APO or an FPO address but everytime i had something sent to me it took FOREVER.

The shipping is certainly cheaper, and VAT free, but it is not flat rate.  I would cover it both ways.   Or Capt can come visit Naples :p

Fair enough, just trying to help out. On another note, he could always be the last to test it, so it didn't hold it up a whole lot.

I'm not here to try anything out (I can't anyway being a newbie), but since you guys are testing the more exotic stuff like zinc keycaps, I figured I would toss in a suggestion for these:

I haven't gotten a set myself yet (although I should since they're only $10), but I figured they'd be interesting to try. (I'm skeptical about the longevity of the material though...)

I have tried these and they feel incredibly cheap and gimmicky. I haven't bought them and I won't.

What are they and where are they from?  They look like they would work on my Orbweaver.

These caps are found here.
