Geekhack Voice Server
« on: Wed, 03 July 2013, 18:10:53 »
Sounds strange, and I'm sure it has been proposed before, but would anyone think that a gh voice server would be fun to try out?

I'm willing to allow my Teamspeak 3 server to be a test bed.

Anyone interested?  Will edit this initial post with details if people are interested.

Update 7/10/13: I'm getting some new networking hardware coming in the mail.  I plan to have the server ready after that point, since it'll be an overhaul of my home network.

Update 7/15/13: Someone beat me to it in making a server, see new thread here http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45805.0

I currently have a teamspeak server that me and a few buddies use.  It is only at like 15 slots i think but you guys can use it if you'd like.  If needed I can get more slots.

I'd try it.
I recommend mumble way over teamspeak. It's foss and you can host your own server with infinite slots for free. Like the interface better too myself.

a geekhack voice server? i would be interesting on how that would go lol, i have an unused vent server, maybe if you plan topics/discussions ahead of a given timeslot that would work. like at 12:00 AM GMT we will be having a discussion about _____________

Just anytime would probably not be as successful as just idling on IRC (I SPY ON ALL OF YOU, MUAHAHA)

Mumble also has iPhone and Mac clients, so for those of us that aren't gamers could easily participate as well.

I was SO going to put in the original post:

Truthfully I'd consider it, but I don't see a point when Teamspeak works just fine.

I've got a friend with a mumble server. I don't think he'd be too happy opening it to a forum though. I can ask him incase though.

I'm not ruling out TS3 though. I was just saying if this were to become official I'd recommend mumble instead.

I was just about to say.. Sorry if I seemed unappreciative. When I said I'd prefer mumble I only meant we should use it if this became an official thing and the website rented a server.

TS3 is fine though and I think it's really cool you're willing to open up the server to us. Thank you :)

Truthfully I'd consider it, but I don't see a point when Teamspeak works just fine.

But it doesn't. You have to pay to host large numbers of users, and there's no linux client (there is an ok third party client I think) and I'm not sure about mac.

There appears to be a Linux and a Mac client. The iOS client is in beta - http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=downloads

I would say 20 to start. We might need to kick people if they idle too long, taking up too many slots.

They are pretty cool tbf, a previous forum I was on had one... and it's kinda like any other chat client only your talking, which means that fewer people will connect and so only the people that actually want to chat will be on it.
Also helps with impromptu games of CSS/TF2/SC2... least in my experience

FYI: Gaming headphones with mic are a well known ripoff.  Your money is better spent buying a good mic that is separate from headphones and using them together in a USB adapter (like this one: http://compare.ebay.com/like/171040005184?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar) -- That Logitech USB headset driver is GREAT, works on Windows without any troubles and Linux I believe out of the box too if you configure pulseaudio and alsa a bit.
