Clack at retail? #Thedream.

It's been done before.

Obviously, but it hasn't happened to me, so it's still #Thedream. :P

There is always hope!  Don't give up yet, epzy.  Keep #TheDream alive.  :)

Never giving up!

Best way to prevent that is to collectively refuse to pay marked up prices for them.  That's not an easy thing to accomplish, but it would work.

Exactly! I was offered a new clack, I offered them the price they paid.
I used to buy them for the market prices but I stopped a couple months ago.
I have 2 CLACKS in my collection now. :) both were $80 so let that be a lesson, even collectors can learn.
:) I only will pay retail now. Spamray was a great influence.

Yes sir, my blank was $80 and my fn was $80. :) I'm fine paying double retail for something I really really love. But nothing higher than that. Yeah Hoffman, I feel great about it, thank you. ;)
If anyone is curious, I sold / traded them for same or less than I paid, I wouldnt mark up an item I got from someone here.

Did you sell your clack collection at retail prices?
On a similar note, I am thinking about passing along a couple of clacks that do not fit my theme anymore, but I feel compelled to ask what I paid for them. If I do sell I won't be making profit, but I will still be perpetuating overpriced clacks.

Sadly I am 0/3 so I didn't get a single clack at retail price. I think it is ok to to sell what you paid but not more.

The problem too is when you did pay a lot for your clacks, then try to get what you paid for them. It makes you look like you are trying to gain when you really are not. Somewhere along the line someone will have to make the difference.

Exactly, just getting what I paid. Many times I charged $10,15,20 less too. :/

I'll be frank---buying and/or selling a single keycap for 200 based on a contrived fad among keyboard enthusiasts is rather absurd.

Brocaps are akin to Supreme camp caps and hipsters.

Many look at it as a piece of hand crafted art. So it's not just a keycap.

But I agree that the prices these days are super high and it is now limited to the realm of serious collector.

I just started in this road and have spent > $100 on a key cap. But I read what Dustin just did and I admire his strong willed to resist the calling of the skulls. And that takes a herculean effort. It's not easy to resist but > $100 is serious money and I definitely do not have the fund to do this long term. Let me pursue my colour theme and I promise I will stop there. Need to remind myself of Dustin and Spam!!! Good examples to emulate as a form of therapy!

Edit: grammar..

Clacks, brocaps, whatever. Hand crafted novelty caps. I can agree with that though. I still don't subscribe to the price inflation by re-sellers. But I guess I just have more fortitude, and less invested in keyboard swag street cred than other people around here.

well no one really subscribes to virtual inflation  acquiring clacks is just like purchasing rare collectibles. idk, i see no reason to judge others for wanting to purchase clacks, and it's not a controversial opinion to be against current clack prices

all keycaps are based off molds, not sure if iron mask or gasmasks were first made from a computer model though.

regardless, there is a difference in aesthetics which obviously separates different custom caps. clacks have a very, very large variety in colors and styles that tend to look pretty awesome.

Right, I guess I'm just wondering why these clacks became so 'legendary' that people are in 'therapy' for not being able to secure one for themselves.

fyi I'm not bashing anyone's desire to own one. I think they look pretty cool and I'd love to have one, but I wouldn't spend 100 bucks to make that happen.

I've bought a few iron masks and binge caps for ~20 bucks, and apparently they are hand crafted as well. Perhaps some are more sought after than others though.

apparently there was a sale once that basically established how much people were willing to pay for clacks (aka $100+) and since then, clacks have been selling for those really high prices.

That's why many only participate in Clacks sales not classifieds. I admit I used to pay a lot but I've tried 3 sales now and no luck. :/

Clack has been around since 2009 while the others only a year or two. That's how his got so popular.

That's actually not true in this 420 sales and EDD dibs (I say this as I saw the results of the sale but I didn't see the others, so am unable to comment on past sales). It happened just two weeks ago and I suggest you read through this therapy thread from many pages back and you will see many new names. In fact, my observation is that there are a lot more new people getting clacks than established members.

In fact, my observation is that there are a lot more new people getting clacks than established members.

I noticed that also. Of course a few well know members got some from what I saw.

So how did one get into the earth day sale?

People were picked by clickclack

I feel like it's always the same people who end up getting clacks through dibs and sales. Maybe I'm just salty because I've never gotten through

True, not getting in makes one a bit salty about the whole thing. It's hard to please everyone is how I rationalize and cope with it. But didn't you get a couple of free CCs from some generous members? That is like winning a 4grabs!  ^-^

I thought clacks (skulls at least) were hand carved...I swear the grooves and cuts are different between my two skulls (with obvious effort to make then similiar)

They are hand-carved by gnomes.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That would explain how he keeps making skulls without molds breaking. :)

My theory, as someone who does not make caps but is loosely familiar with the process, is that he has molds that make more than one cap at a time (perhaps 4 or so).  In order to cast that mold in the first place he would need 4 caps sculpted to place in the molding material to cast the negative mold.  I would guess that he sculpted those initial caps not exactly the same, because he's a human, and those are the variations we see.  So then that would lead to there being a few different "flavors" out there of casts, each slightly different.

But what do I know.   :))

I wonder if he also has different molds for the single shot, double shot, etc. I also have no idea what the cap making process is, so just a guess.

Same.  I just saw something like "first to PM" then PM'd.  When I went to do a double-take, post was gone. *poof*

I wonder who got it.
