Popular keyboards for each switch?
« on: Tue, 23 July 2013, 14:27:20 »
I'm building up my wish list for keyboards, and I'd like to know a bit more about popular models for certain switches, as well as which switches are most popular (by this I mean the ALPS)
Are there any keyboards that use the following switches?
MX/White
MX/Clear
MX/Black
MX/Darkgrey
MX/Grey

And what are the popular ALPS switches? I know there's the in-production Matias clicky and tactile. What keyboards use these new ones, and what are the popular older ALPS switches? What keyboards use those?

I'm trying to move away from the common MX switches and would like some of your guys' input. Another question: Are there any popular topre keyboards other than the HHKB and 87u?

Captain` BA has some good switch info there is a link in his sig, he will probably post in here also.

I think you mean QTang. EK doesn't have clears listed.

AFAIK there are no boards with nothing but Whites, Greys, and Dark greys. You usually find those as single keys on some boards, like on some blue boards you'll have a green spacebar. Lots of Cherry boards come with blacks, and some with clears that you can harvest.

I know Whites were on Race and Pure keyboards. Not sure of any other models.

The white races are on mechanicalkeyboards.com right now :D

It's Qtan.

And what are the popular ALPS switches? I know there's the in-production Matias clicky and tactile. What keyboards use these new ones, and what are the popular older ALPS switches? What keyboards use those?

Matias Clicky can be found on the Matias Tactile Pro keyboard and MK.com and Matias sell loose switches.
Matias Quiet can be found on the Matias Quiet Pro keyboard and MK.com and Matias sell loose switches.

I'm a huge fan of the Dell AT101W which has Tactile Black Alps. I also really enjoy the Clicky White Alps which can be found in a Focus FK-2001. Tactile Salmon Alps can be found in Apple AEK keyboards which seem to be very popular.

There's a few boards with complicated blue alps but I can't remember the models at the moment; usually Chicony boards.

I just got a Siig Minitouch with Monterey Blue Alps Variants which I really like.

If you go to the DeskThority Wiki, they'll have a nice listing of boards for switches. If you search for "MX Black", there should be a list of boards that have MX Black switches.

It's Qtan.

Yeah I was confused too.

Quinan Tang = QTang
His email address is qtang1s@...

You're right though, I think his eBay store says QTan. Either way, it's coming from another language with non-latin characters so it's open to interpretation.

There are "complicated dampened cream ALPS" on the Apple Extended Keyboard II I believe, which is rather common and not really hard to get. On mine however, there are "white cream ALPS" which are considered pretty rare by the wiki: http://deskthority.net/wiki/Apple_Extended_Keyboard_II
Then there are other versions with Mitsumi clones or salmon/pink ALPS switches (I have a Apple M0118 with salmon ALPS which is also pretty rare). :) In the end, I would consider the Apple M3501 (AEK2) as the most popular keyboard using cream ALPS, and the Apple M0116 (AEK) the most popular one using salmon/orange ALPS.

So, are tactile/clicky like complicated/simplified? What's the difference between complicated/simplified?

1) So, are tactile/clicky like complicated/simplified?

2) What's the difference between complicated/simplified?

1) No

2) How the internals are built up. As I understand it, legit Alps switches are "complicated" and the "simplified" versions are Alps clones.
