Keyboard for office

Hey everyone, i'm looking at buying a quickfire xt that will be used at my office.

Ive 'tested' blues at work, and no one has asked me about the sound yet, but i'm a bit worried.

I absolutely love blues out of what i've tried ( Red, black, and blue ) I'm not a fan of the linear switch ( for typing anyway )

but i'm considering browns, but don't have a way to test them ( no local shop has a brown )

I can also just order blues and o-ring it.

Ideas, suggestions?

I use a Filco MJ2 with Blues. If you're really worried about the sound, get a Matias Quiet Pro or mod your board to Jailhouse Blues. Those are the quietest switches I've tried.

Any of the MX switches will be louder than the RD. But my office isn't that quiet so I can get away with Blues.

I sit in a cube farm and use a Leopold with MX Blues on it, no problem, its just everyone else knows when you are working or not.

I really don't care for browns. If you like blues and the noise isn't an issue just go with it.

If you've got the money a silent Realforce will do you well. I love mine in the office. Otherwise, I'd say blacks would probably be the quietest for a normal typist on MX, though the TK doesn't come with them. At that point you might as well go with blues.

yeah, I'm dead set on the QF-XT.

but zero people ( aside from our old school hippy IT guy ) knows what a mech keyboard is, and I'm planning a highly custom keyboard, so I wanna get it right.

EDIT: the board comes in greens ( green, blue, red, and brown ) as well. ( finding one may be a problem though )

Ooo yeah, forgot the Silent Topre boards were really quiet as well.

I'f you're thocking away on it it's about on par with a normal rubber dome, but if you're a proper touch typist and type very lightly on the thing you can't even hear it.

If you're planning on customizing, do NOT get a TK. It's got a non standard spacing and key size in the bottom row that'll make finding full replacement sets a nightmare.

i'm pretty OCD about hardware design, and the qfr/filco is the only 'perfect' board in my eyes, no extra crap. clean simple and minimal. Basically every razor products is my OCD nightmare ( though i have to use a few of their products as there is no alternatives )

dang, there is about a $20 difference between greens and blues, i'll just go with blues then.
I couldn't find any decent reviews of this board, so once I get it in ( i'll order it today ) I suppose i'll make a detailed write up and such.

This pretty much. If you have to have a mechanical keyboard in an office environment then you should get something quiet. I use blues at home, and I enjoy using them. I have membrane crap at the office and my environment is quiet - even with white noise machines you can hear someone typing or talking on the phone 3 or 4 cubes over and our cube walls are high. If I brought my keyboard with blues into the office it would probably get "sabotaged" while I was away

I don't type a lot, but a fair amount. How much quieter do the o-rings make blues? I've seen so many comparison videos on youtube, but they don't really help me out much because I have no frame of reference when it comes to ambient noise levels that I'm used to. I would like to see a db meter comparison of the two. (with and without o-rings).

When you have people yelling into phones, constant cursing, smashing of rubber domes, and the drone of air conditioning/heat, Blues don't really get noticed. And I've never had anyone complain to me about my board. Trust me, the people who sit near me would let me know if it was annoying.
