ISO and ANSI
« on: Sun, 11 August 2013, 10:28:27 »
Now I've come to realise something being a Brit in this keyboard world. ISO is almost a complete pain to own.

Keycaps are harder to come by, keyboards are harder to come by. Everything in general is just a complete pain.

Should I contact switch to ANSI and stay with it making this keyboard hobby of mine a lot easier?

Stupid, open ended question I know but the range of ISO keyboards is so limited it seems daft to pursue it.

Thanks for your opinions

In Brazil we also use ISO. I hate it. That big enter key is horrible :P

I recommend the switch.

Easy one.

If you're serious about this new hobby of yours, switch to ANSI.
Oh... and start saving money right now. :)

If you stick to ISO then everything will just die naturally.
At some point your brain will overcome frustration and make you stop.

Thanks folks.

Time to make that RMA up with the Keyboard Co for my Filco then!

Ha, yes I have seen how this can really munch away on cash. Just the price of the HHKB and the Realforce boards made me weep a little!

No, not yet but I'd really like the HHKB to take with me rather than using my portable's keyboard!

In Poland it was always mixture of German based ISO layout (Polish typewriter's QWERTZ layout) and ANSI (similar to other eastern block countries - Polish Programmers QWERTY layout). I used both over the years without even paying attention, but since I started paying attention and using quality keyboards, I prefer ANSI layout. It is easier to come by and it somehow feels more ergonomic to me.

I use both layouts and tbh it's not that big of a switch if you know how to touch type.

When I was a kid we had an ISO keyboard around in the house. When we got an ANSI keyboard, I thought the ISO was old and ugly. ANSI was slim and cool .
ISO with small backspace is really annoying to me :P

I switched to ANSI.. However, there are very nice ISO keysets to be had. There are a lot of original Cherry doubleshot and dyesub keysets in ISO.

Do you miss out on any extra keys going from ISO to ANSI?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

1 key next to the shift which sometimes does bother me a little bit.
