Topre vs MX
« on: Tue, 13 August 2013, 09:13:47 »
Hey guys,
I was wondering which switch is better, because I've only used mx switches so far. I should probably ask what the pros and cons for each switch are, since the awnser most likely won't be as easy as 'X is better than Y'.
Thanks in advance :)

The basic TL;DR is that "it's subjective".

The best one is better than the other one.

Try both.

Own both.

Then get a buckling spring keyboard ;)

Yeah it's pretty subjective. Topre is pretty much the highest quality rubber dome there is. With MX the highest quality is a tuned, lubed, and stickered switch. Personally i find both to be about equally enjoyable, but with most people it seems to be one way or the other. And just because Topre is a rubber dome doesn't mean it's bad, because most rubber domes are cheap and quite terrible. But then again there are some crappy mech switches too that no one has ever heard of.

I own both, and I can honestly say I like both equally. If you like heavier keys and a nice heavy response feedback, get the Topre. I have a 55g uniform Topre Realforce and it's the highest quality keyboard I have ever typed on. In build quality the Topre is much better than most other MX keyboards. Only one that comes close I think is probably Filco (from manufactured boards anyway).

I can agree to an extent with this. I enjoy both, and there is a strange phenomenon with Topre that is, though the switch is 55g or 45g, it feels a lot heavier if you were to compare it to an MX switch. This is because the massive tactile bump the Topre domes have in their nature. I'll say now my 45g uniform feels heavier than my 62g whites, but it isn't tiring at all. All Topre boards are solid boards that are built to last. The fact that it doesn't rely on contact makes it a board that can last for a lifetime granted you take care of it.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Especially when it is running around on the fields.

Don't be sorry, just search. I think banning someone for asking a question (especially a newbe) no matter how irritating is just wrong.

As suggested read up on the matter.

I'd rather use it for rowing a boat. Nothing feels better than knowing when you get tactile feedback while paddling.
