Help Installing Geek Feng's Blank Keycaps
« on: Sun, 15 September 2013, 03:08:58 »
Hi all,

My blank keycaps from Geek Feng's eBay store just arrived today, but I'm having trouble finding where to put each keycap. This may be because I'm using a TKL keyboard but ordered a 105 keycap set (he didn't have any 87-key sets as far as I could tell). Can someone who has done this before guide me? I'm pretty sure I got the big keys in the correct place. It's the alphanumeral, F-keys, arrow keys, pg up/pg down, etc, that I'm unsure about. I'm including pictures. Hopefully one of you guys can help me out.

The picture above shows my progress so far.

The left bag contained 19 keys, and as stated above, I've got that one figured out. The 4 remaining keys are an extra caps lock, and I think three additional keys for the numpad. The right bag contains 36 keys and I'm confused as to where I should put them. I believe these keys are a bit taller than the rest of the keys in this set.

The left bag contains 18 keys, a little shorter than the bag of 36 from the previous picture. The right bag contains 14 keys, which are the shortest in the set.

This final bag also contains 18 keys, but the keys here are a bit shorter than the 18 keys in the bag above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry for asking a newb question. I tried to google an answer but I couldn't find anything.

The shortest ones should go on the z, x, c.... row and the arrow keys. The second lowest should be the a, s, d... row and the highest profile ones should go on the q, w, e... and F row

Can't you just put the original keycaps on a flat surface and find blanks with matching profiles? Since they're blank it doesn't matter what goes where as long as the profiles are correctly placed.

Thanks guys, I was able to figure it out with your help. I actually realized that the shortest keys were supposed to be the middle (ASDF row), because three of them had the "bump" for the homekeys. I'm assuming two of them are for F and J, and the third one is for the 5 on the numpad. The tallest keys went to F key rows and the number row. Second tallest went to the Qwerty row. And that leaves the second shortest keys at the bottom row and arrow keys. Here's the result:

Look under the caps if there are any lettering
Usually it would say r1/ r2/r3/r4

Now that you've worked it out, should you ever remove the keycaps, and discover that there is not some lettering moulded into the underside, perhaps put a small black dot (e.g. with a CD marker) on the underside of each keycap to remember which row it goes into.

Or get a keycap box where you can arrange the keycaps as they came off the board.
