What is it exactly? Are you making it so that you can open the switch and change the stem and or spring?

Yes sir! I think i will use this bored to test out different switches.

if you want to open the switch on the shine without desoldering anything, you need to mod the switch too

Is this a better approach than using a dremel tool (or small grinding tool with a drill)?
