I'm sorry. When I got serious about buying on ebay about 2004, sniping was well-established.
Allowing Auction Sniper (my fave, there are several) to post your bid during the final minute of the auction allows you to take your best shot without participating in, or fueling, a bidding war. When buyers get emotional about a desirable item, they can sometimes overbid. Good for sellers, bad for buyers.
Bottom line is that if you have the high bid you win, otherwise you don't, but there is a lot to be said for not tipping your hand until it is absolutely necessary.
Do what prdlm2009 says, snipe early with your best price, and forget about it. If you win, you can be sure that you got the best price, and it will only cost you pennies for the sniping fee, and only if you win.
