Apple iPod Classic 1st Generation resale market
« on: Mon, 28 October 2013, 21:25:49 »
Ok, while cleaning out my garage, I found a 1st generation iPod 10 GB with the scroll wheel that actually moves, and the item is getting more attention on Ebay than anything that I have ever sold.

I looked at some sold listings, and ones in good condition with charging cords or original packaging were going for hundreds of dollars.

What gives?  Are there some Apple hipsters in Brooklyn driving up the price of these things while competing with each other to see who can be more retro?

Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

Probably. Set up an auction and let it go up. You have nothing to lose

I did.  Up to $40 after one day with 5 watchers.  And I made it clear that I do not know if the item even works because I do not have a firewire to test the item.

I have my first iPod, the iPod mini.

Maybe that will be worth something one-day.  ^-^
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

Wonder if I could do the same with my original brown Zune....

A lot of the players that had replacable hard drives maintained value pretty well.  I have a 5g iPod that I swapped a 240gig drive into.  I love it.

Yeah that's my personal fav design, though it's so big and the screen is so bad, would need some serious modding to make it useable.
I remember at the time a mate of mine had the 20gb iPod (that version) and he had 15gb of music on it and the UI lagged like mad... It was painfully slow

That might explain it.  The like new 5gb models are selling for a lot.  And the hipster factor.

This is a 1st gen classic thread, bro.  If your scroll wheel does not physically move and it does not have a Firewire connection, it does not belong.

I sold my 1st gen 5Gb iPod with original box for about $100 a few months ago.  They shot up in value after Steve Jobs died.  Before that, it probably would have sold for like $20 :P

Up to 8 watchers.  Gonna be a bidding war.  Can't wait.  I only hope the thing turns on for the buyer.

I still have the 1st gen Gold Mini iPod--apparently Minis aren't very popular, though they look way better in my subjective opinion

The funds for a µTron is not the problem.  Trying to justify spending $600 on a keyboard to be shipped from Japan while other parts of my life scream for attention is the problem.

These things are actually worth something? What the hell. I drive a jeep, so it's kinda hard to leave expensive things in my car and not worry about them being stolen.. I was going to get one of these dinky things just to have so I wouldn't be worried if someone stole a $10 iPod from me.

I am sure the older touch wheel models are still of little value.  There is something about the 1st and 2nd gen that makes them more valuable as a used commodity than newer models.  I would brush up on your iPod generations and poke around Ebay.  Definitely a good deal to be had.

Going into the homestretch with less than 24 hours left in the auction.  It's only at $42, but has 14 watchers.  Should be interesting.

Predictions? I say $80+, at least.
