Topre spring mod
« on: Wed, 30 October 2013, 22:57:47 »
So I like the way the spacebar sounds, especially, and I see it has a spring around the plunger to make it heavier. Has anyone ever tried putting similar springs under the other keys? If so, how does it affect the feel and sound? I would imagine you'd use something very light, say, 5-10g.

That would be nice and I think it has already been discussed.

I would like to have a number of these springs to be able to experiment with them. I would start by putting one under the Enter key so I don't press it too easily.

I expect problems if you try to replace this spring.

He's referring to the spring on top of the space bar plunger, not the ones inside the board.

Yes you are right. I have edited my post a few seconds after posting it, when I realized my mistake.

When I had an FC660C I put the space bar spring under the backspace key.

You mean that you don't have it anymore? I thought you liked it?

The problem might be getting hold of a quantity of those springs without sacrificing another Topre board.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It was my first topre board but I just couldn't get used to the small layout (same reason I got rid of my pokers), I only had it for like a week if that, since then I've tried 3 other topre boards including the HHKB which somehow has me mesmerized with its layout.

I would assume springs are not the hardest thing to get custom made. They don't have to be identical, just the right size.
