Poker vs Poker 2
« on: Tue, 12 November 2013, 12:55:59 »
Hi GeekHack!!!

I just fell in love with 60% keyboards and looking around to get one asap.

I dont want any arrow keys and HHKB is out of my reach.

So now I am stuck between Poker & Poker 2.

So what would you recommend?

Poker x if you want to mod your switches without soldering (changing springs or stems).
Poker 2 if you want a programmable layer

I don't find it to be to much of a difference, with a SS plate there is quite a difference though.
I am bigfatmc over at other places!

Eh, I would not buy from that site. I've heard a lot of horror stories.

Unless anyone else here has ordered from kbtrace.com and can comment? I really have no direct experience with them.

Yea seems like the Poker 1 is past it's EOL, so finding one "new" is next to impossible.
I don't see the Poker X available anywhere either...or am I missing it?

I don't think I ever read something bad about them? Where did you read those "horror stories"?

I found some on amazon. Thing is I'm in the US. Right now I'm on my phone so I can't actually see if they charge a lot for shipping.…

Looks like mixed reviews. Personally, I wouldn't order there, especially if there are Pokers available through classifieds.

Where do you live? If you live in the US, it would be cheaper to buy the Poker from feng.

So now I am stuck between Poker & Poker 2.

So what would you recommend?

Poker 2 is better than the original Poker in every way. There's no reason to get the original poker unless you can find it for significantly cheaper.

I agree that Poker II is better. I had the first one and i didn't like it as much as i like the new one. Also, the stabilizers make it easy to change the bigger keycaps. Everything to me is just better with Poker II. I don't think you would regret getting a Poker II but you might wish you got one if you get a Poker I instead.  :)

That's if you want to be able to switch stems easily. But then again there is a sort of excitement with modding your own boards.
I would rather borrow someone's solder and desolder than actually buy my own set.
But the poker II from what I read around the internet is better than the Poker X.

I have had both models of Poker in both blue, and brown. The keyboards just sound better in the Poker II. It seems to sound "cleaner" if that makes any sense. I am not a huge fan or soldering because i am not good at it. I can switch keycap and that is the extent of it. The one thing i wish Poker did, as i wish HHKB did, is minimize the spacebar a bit, and then put dedicated arrow keys. Oh, and a bluetooth version. Other than that i am happy.  :thumb:

I wish it would have keep the ability to lock arrow keys to the lower right.
Being left handed, I never use the right modifiers. The old poker would allow me to make use of them.
I'd prefer the Pn moved to Right Alt and PMode to to the Fn layer of the Pn key (I don't get why use Ctrl for this). I'd also prefer the FN key on the left replacing the WIN key by default.
Actually, I'd prefer if keyboards just removed all the duplication of keys to the right since I prefer to use them on the left (even shift) and just put the arrows, but I think I'm in a minority being left handed.

They are not good, but I ordered three times from them and everything eventually arrived.

They STILL have the original Poker in stock, black key caps with white legends (not unreadable laser engraved as their site shows). I have got one from them last month. They have it in Cherry MX red and black.

As far as I know it's one of the last places where you can purchase the original Poker.

I agree. I didn't even think about that. I am left handed as well and it takes some getting used to with using the arrow keys on my left as opposed to the right.
