Who should I go to get these made?
« on: Wed, 27 November 2013, 12:57:33 »
I have some designs for keys but don't know who to contact to make them. I've contacted 4-5 companies but none of them gave me a quote nor even replied to my emails.

A very low quality image of the keys I want can be found here http://imgur.com/NZjBiSp

Thanks in advance,

Jon

WASD keyboards can make them but they won't be colored.

In any case you will be looking at probably having at least 20 of each made to make it remotely cost effective. What row, key size and base color do you want to do them? Assuming you need the legends in those or close to those colors...
You could do them as dye sublimation with imsto (who is a member here with Chinese manufacturing contacts). Key base must be lighter color than legend, you will probably be more or less limited to white keys.
You could do them as doubleshots with Signature Plastics. Most designs should be doable, you would definitely need to rework the hand to simplify it a little bit.
You could do them as infilled keys with QWERkeys.

If you just need the legend, and the color isn't important you can do them as lasered one off with WASD keyboards.
Or... you could go with DIY ghetto approach and use waterslide decal with clear coating. Or you could print out inserts for relegendable keycaps.

Thanks for the helpful replies.

I couldn't find an explanation on the net for infilled keys, do you mind explaining what that is?

Since it won't be very cost effective to get coloured keys I think for now I will get a one off set from WASD. Should I desperately need colour I suppose I could contact imsto although he hasn't replied to my pm from last month. Is there some secret way I don't know about to get in contact with him?

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

talk to Imsto. He quoted me $3 per custom color dyesub, although I'm not clear what the MOQ is. But I suppose if you could do an interest check, you might wind up meeting MOQ.

Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

If you're thinking of making a Quake set--I would totally be down for that.  Multiples of that :o

Sounds like that might be an excuse for a GB!

Just upload an image on the website custom key page and order the color keys you want :) They will make it.

You could also check with IMSTO, he should be able to get these made for you using dyesub on PBT, not sure if an MOQ will be required.
