Cherry tampoprinted and lasered keycaps
« on: Tue, 20 January 2009, 06:54:19 »
My G84-4700LUCUS-2 arrived this morning. I am a little disappointed to see the legends look cream compared to the white tampoprinting on my G84-4100PTMGB-2. Also, the casing and keycaps on the G84-4100 are a darker black. The G84-4700 looks a bit washed out. If the box wasn't sealed I would say it had been left in the sun. I'm so fussy. :( I was expecting them to match perfectly.

In this photo you can see the difference but it is more noticeable in person. It is strange that the lasered keycaps on the numpad feels like paint sitting on the keycap rather than coarse etching.

On the plus side the switches don't feel too stiff. I wish it had an LED on the numpad itself.

I took some macro photos of the keycaps. They both have a smooth stone-like texture but I prefer the feel of the G84-4100, it has a little less tack.

you could try a little toothpaste to get them white again.
Or a TINY amount of tcut.
Would be painstaking though.

And the G84-4100 texture looks more regular, like a grid. I can understand that you're disappointed because of the (quite extreme) mismatching colors. Such imperfections drive me nuts.

I just tried some whitening toothpaste on a cotton bud but it didn't help brighten the lettering. The texture of the keycap around the lettering has become a little shiny. If I do it any more it will be noticeable, which I don't want.

I can't use Rit dye either because the keycaps are thin ABS which will melt too easily.
