« on: Sat, 07 December 2013, 01:34:56 »
Has anybody tried O Rings with Cherry MX Clears? Any idea how it feels?

Thanks.

Well, it feels fantastic on my leopold FC660m - all that cushiony goodness can't be beat! Actually, with clears you don't bottom out so much over time anyway because the pressure mounts after actuation but still I prefer o-rings or soft-landing pads for maximum quietness for late night poundage  ;D

edit: Oh and welcome to Geekhack! Is this going to be your first mechanical keyboard?

It feels a bit mushy, but when you type fast enough you don't notice as much as on other switches.

BTW, with the bottoming-out noise removed, the noise on the rebound becomes very apparent.

I was thinking from where this rebound noise comes from. Can't we add another cushion somewhere to eliminate this?

Thank you for the welcome!

This is like my 5th mechanical keyboard. Btw I have the exact same model. A Leopold FC660M in white with Cherry MX Clears. I try not to bottom out on these as they are quite stiff. It is also one of the harder keys to type on entry but you know what, I like the way it types. Very different from the other Cherry MX switches. I'm just wondering how much the O Rings will soften the impact when I do bottom out.

How apparent is very apparent? Is it very loud like Cherry MX Blues? Currently the noise from the Clears are very minimal. I like it a lot. Great tactility and minimal noise.

woah in white sure you're not talking the Leopold FC700R (tenkeyless)? Anyway, didn't know 660M came in white...

I think he meant the sound when the key automatically pops back up (plastic rubbing on plastic, I think) which you would have heard or not on your own board.

It's a bit late here in Oz...so I crack it out tomorrow and give you as accurate a description as I can as to the sound with o-rings  :)

edit: I just saw the white FC660M with clears at qtan's store.... :)

Hi I recorded the sound of my FC660M with black soft-landing pads installed:

0.00 Bottoming-out alpha keys as hard as possible
0.17 Bottoming-out space bar
0.23 Bottoming-out out backspace
0.32 Releasing alpha keys (rebound noise)
0.42 Releasing space bar (rebound noise)
0.46 Releasing backspace (rebound noise)

edit: sorry, when I removed a keycap I found that I had the black soft-landing pads installed NOT o-rings  :-[
