Spacebar switches for each switch type?
« on: Sun, 29 December 2013, 10:39:49 »
So I recently ordered a set of brown switches to replace my black, but in my excitement I failed to realize that my space bar is actually a linear grey.
Would it feel weird if I put the same switch in the space bar as the rest of the keys?
What would be a better option? Brown stem with black spring?
And for curiosity's sake, what are the most common(or your favorite) spacebar switches for each type?

It could be whatever your preference is, but some OEM like Ducky use the next stiffer same type or switch. For example blue with green sb, brown with clear sb, black with grey sb, etc. Others are uniform, I prefer a stiffer linear like black or grey for spacebars.

Shouldn't be weird, all my board has the same switches for spacebar.

Try brown with black or clear spring, perhaps even using the darkgrey spring, test it...
The common combos are: Red/Black, Black/DarkGrey, Blue/Green, Clear/Grey, ErgoClear/Clear

Lots of boards have the same switch all around, but you might find yourself hitting the spacebar a bit harder than before. Like what MJ45, when spacebars are a different switch, it's normally just the next most similar switch with a higher actuation force.

With Cherry keycap I definitely recommend using stiffer switch for spacebar. Cherry spacebar is thicker with much more material and heavier than those thin OEM found on most other keyboard. Light switch on Cherry space feels really too soft like it just collapses and I think it feels really bad. I generally roll with next heavy as TheSoulhunter listed out. I don't care for browns much, but if I did I would use clear for space. Grey is traditional but it is a LOT heavier than browns and a much bigger jump up in force. A black spring in a brown will do but browns feel even more linear with them.

I guess I'll try it out with a black spring and maybe get a single clear switch if I don't like it.

Even Topre sometimes includes an extra spring under the space bar.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
