Is the G8-3000 similar to a Das III?

Hi there.

Can anyone tell me if a Cherry G8-3000 has a similar key action and feel to a Das III keyboard?

I'm interested in getting the Cherry as the Das III Euro layout (which I need) only comes in a blank keys option. (Why can't they make a non-blank version, it can't be hard to do can it?)

hey. The G80 3000 is almost the same as the das. The feel will be a bit different just because of the construction of the board. (the das it not very well made though so dont think it the better of the 2)
Both use the clicky light cherry blue switches.
I say go for the cherry you will love it.

Make sure the second letter of the model type is an "S", e.g. G80-3000LSxxx, as that's the variant with the blue switches (clicky).

I disagree with that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the build-quality of my DAS.

Ok firstly there were 3 switches that needed to be replaced.
Then there is the rollover issue.
Then the fact that Wellingtons came with a big hole in it.
Then there is that you cannot open it easily due to the plastic snap together design.
Also the soldering is poor and a few of my traces had been repaired.
And the case does not fit together well as seen in this picture.
Its made from easy to scratch plastic and overall the build quality is very poor.

I guess you have been lucky with yours.

Interesting... I had not noticed that on my own Das KB until I saw it in your photo, and upon checking mine, it looks the same.

Regarding the glossy finish, it looks great at first, but I found it very easy to scratch on the first day of ownership.  Otherwise, I've been pretty happy with it.

The lower half of the case is also made of a pretty cheap plastic.
If you did open it you would probably find a few of the pcb supports have broken off.
The are not loose in the case but held on by the skin of the plastic.
I had to glue a few down on mine.

I bought my G80-3000LSCGB-2 from http://www.cherrykeyboardsrus.co.uk.  It's a very fine keyboard.  Build quality is not as good as the best keyboards I've used, but it's not bad.  I think it's biggest issue is that it's so large, there is more ability for it to flex, compared to say a craptastic Dell rubber dome.

Looking at photographs, the Das II was very similar to the G80-3000.  It uses the same case and same keys (albeit blank).  Not sure whether the controller is any different.  The Das III has a more stylised case and definitely uses a different controller.

the controller on the das3 has something wrong with it as every one of them has an issue when typing 2 characters very close together. You will not always get the one you pressed first.

The Das 2 was the same as the cherry in every way but the logo and the blank keys.
Although cherry USA did make an order for a batch of blank black 80-3000s. There is a blank white version as well but it has not been seen outside Japan.

Hi there.

Again, many thanks for the replies to this question of mine.

It feels good to join in with this forum since, I must admit, I'm a bit of a keyboard collector (or a keyboard alcoholic??). I've got a nice collection brewing, my recent purchase being a Logitech illuminated keyboard http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/4740&cl=US,EN which is proving very popular with the lads at work (I'm a programmer).

The developer sitting next to me in the office is using an old IBM Model M from 1989 - I like the sound on that, even if other people in the room might be going mental with the "clickety-click" noise, but I love it! :)

I'm going to give the Cherry G80-3000 a go - I'll purchase it from here http://www.cherrykeyboardsrus.co.uk/G803000+Series-Details.htm as it looks to be the model with the blue Cherry switches.

I've still got a Cherry G83-6105 which I bought in 1997. Though it's looking a bit dirty, it still works fine, with a firm rubebr feel to it. Must admit that I'm a bit of a clicky fan though.

Correct, the LSCGB would be a UK-layout board with blues.

Just had a listen of that MP3, sounding very cool indeed. I ordered the keyboard earlier today, hope to get it on Tuesday. Looking forward to it now having just heard the audio.

I'm looking for a new keyboard (again), after it turns out that my clicky SMK-88 creates a problem in combo with my Fujitsu ScanSnap. But my keyboard tray is small, and I rarely use the numerical keypad, so I want one without. Alas, there are not too many options (for the Mac). Alas, http://www.cherry.de only seem to make the INITIAL for MAC - which is an extended keyboard that leaves me no space for my mouse.

You can get the G84-4100 with a windows key, those ones are newer. Alternatively you can try the G80-1800 series which is similar in size to the Macally MK96 which is a shortened G80-3000 you could say. Or maybe DSI Modular Keyboard similar in size to the SMK-88, but i fear it has a high power load with its usb ports. Cherry just brought out some new ML switch type keyboards G84-5200 i think, which is similar to the G84-4100 but includes a numpad.
