Well I was thinking about that, but a number of people have contacted me saying they found geekhack through looking for these caps, and I thought that was pretty cool and figured this would be the most fair way. But, I see what you mean, and I haven't decided yet, just throwing ideas around

Is your set in the raffle pile? An unclaimed order would end up in the extra's pile I assume.

Anyway, I might not be wrong to have a raffle, but not being clear from the beginning maybe is. I got an "OK" when asking for an extra set. Now I have a "maybe". Like being downgraded from economy class to the cargo hold on a flight.

If I had been put on a list for extras and someone came in asking to sell their place in the GB to someone, I would have passed on the opportunity, knowing that I'm already getting some of the "extras".  If it had been designated as randomized from the beginning I would agree with your logic, but I don't think that's what most people (if anyone) assumed would happen.

Just to be clear, no one on the extra list is guaranteed a set.

I made the list in case I have extras. Suppose  10 sets are lost in the mail. In that situation I would have to send all the additional sets to those people.

This is just my personal opinion,

As someone on the "extra" list, I think the fairest way is to go the random route. I was not active for the GB, and missed it.  I think that to be given the opportunity to buy a set, is great.  Just because I had my name in the hat before some people on the list, doesn't negate the fact that we are all late to the party and in no way entitles me to a set over someone else in the same position.

I think the multiple account thing was a joke.  I would be surprised if people do that, then again, I'm a relatively new poster around here. I personally, just respected billnye's choice on the matter, since he purchased extras.

20 people???  i'm part of the that list, bill and i really regret not being able to take part in this group buy. i would just like to suggest that all GMK groupbuys should mark up extras so as to not encourage lists like this. i mean 20 people?? that could have been a make or break of a gmk group buy.

It means he has to cover $800 ($40 ? * 20) from his own pocket with no guarantee of getting his money back.
'No Extras' should encourage people to get in on this. Not give the GB organizer an extra headache.

If you are not there when a ship sails it is your own fault. If you miss your plane you have to pay to have your luggage removed and buy a new ticket. It's only fair.

In fact, that is exactly what the Vendors who buy these to stock in their stores do. They buy in at the group buy price, so naturally they have to mark them up a bit to cover their overhead, etc. No reason why the GB organizer shouldn't do the same with any extras for sale.

Unless the organizer is a commercial vendor there are usually no extras available.
When I first read your post it reminded me of some of the Reddit comments from the thread SpAmRaY linked to.

One thing that is common for organizers to do is buy up to the next 'tier' or price break level. It can be the same cost to order 300 units as ordering 270 units would be. In that case, there will be some extras, at no fault of the organizer. Also, it is smart to order at least a few extras to cover things that go missing or get damaged in shipping.

That's what Ivan usually does in his GBs. Ask for a voluntary donation to cover these costs. Still, Even when every buyer of an GMK GB adds $3 it doesn't get you that much as the above example shows. $750 doesn't get you all that many sets like this and full sets can be well over $150 each.
