Wicked.

Probably should have brought it out 3 weeks ago, but it will still push $1K.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Not from me.

But people pay huge premiums for virgins. Genuine IBM, black label, fantastic box, this is far more desirable and special than any of these others that have sold for roughly half that.

Hello,
Just found this forum after my find of the century on Friday.

I had to drive an hour, but I scored a brand new / never used IBM SSK from 1993 for $10 from two old ladies in Upstate, NY.

I've tested it, in fact I am typing this post on it now.  Of course it works absolutely perfect.  I'm on the fence about selling it on ebay.  Such a great find but the market for these things is tempting to say the least.

I also have an original silver/square badger from 1986 that was with my fathers original IBM PC.

Anyway, a couple of pics...

That's awesome. Craigslist?

I'd say to keep it if at all possible. I've always regretted selling great secondhand finds. Money comes and goes but something like this is really special.

There is a lot of pride in ownership of a special find.

Great find! Congrats!

You could always consider selling it to me for, let's say, $150 ;). You'd make a nice profit and still be able to pass on some of the good fortune  :thumb:

Yeah found it on Craigslist.

Long story short, I live in Endicott, NY.  Birthplace of IBM.  My great grandfather helped construct Building 32 "The Clock Tower" and the IBM Schoolhouse building.  Every generation has worked at some point in time inside of an IBM building here in Endicott.  There's a ton of history in the family.  Hell, I practically grew up at the IBM Country Club.  Stuffing my face with hot dogs and cheeseburgers in the lounge overlooking the 1st tee of the golf course, playing basketball in the gym, swimming in the pools, burying my brother in sand outside on the playground and attending huge IBM employee Christmas parties in the ball room where every child in attendance received a gift from the company.

My grandfather had an original 5150 with the Model F.  That's on display in my uncle's computer room / office.  I have my fathers PC XT (21mb HDD / 360kb 5-1/4" floppy) with the 1390120 no LED / silver badge and a 5155 Portable PC that rocks the tiny orange monochrome screen.  Classics that have been preserved without lots of wear & tear and all of them power up and will boot to DOS 3.3.  Nothing like hearing the crack of the power switch in the back corner of the PC get flipped and it start to make that perfect whine while it comes to life.

I even have a couple Unicomp boards I bought a couple years ago.  They're decent but the two that I have, the build quality is not consistent.

Question is, really how rare are these SSK's?  I knew they existed but I've always been the full 101-key type guy.

My understanding is that they're uncommon, but not necessarily "rare". That's why so many people here are surprised by the prices they're fetching. IBM made significantly fewer SSK's than standard Model M's, but if you're motivated you can definitely find an SSK. This is in contrast to the 62key Model F "Kishsavers" that were found recently, which are genuinely rare.

Compared to others on this forum though, I know absolutely jack **** about this stuff ;).

Well, that went for a fairly realistic price considering it was a virgin. ~$431

I did not bid on this one because the seller said the keyboard was new with a used cable.  :))

You never truly know what you are getting, but the numbers matched and the condition of the board and the cable seem to match up with what the seller described.

I'll add that ideally a "NIB" SSK should ideally be closer to $350. $431 isn't that far off on price.

There is no "ideal" price for any good outside of a planned economy... it's worth whatever people are willing to pay.  :thumb:

I'm not saying the price was far off.  I didn't bid because I kept thinking why the cable was a used one.  But I see your point.   :thumb:
