[eBay] MEGA LOAD: 30 IBM Model M's including 5 SSKs
« on: Wed, 05 February 2014, 17:09:27 »
A lot of 30 IBM Model M's that includes 5 SSKs.  Out of all of them, two regular gray labels are boxed, and there are two SSK's in pretty good condition as well.

Prepare yourselves.  Be warned... there is $200 shipping, but that I'm sure that doesn't stop you guys.

Shhh before he changes his mind!

Actually I've tried to buy things and ask questions from this seller before and never got any response.

I thought about just offering $400 and see if he'd accept but I don't think its worth it.

Yes, yes, and there's one SSK that has a chunk taken out of the case.

Surely not worth anyone's time to bid on these, you might as well be throwing your money in the trash.

Exactly. Not even worth the $200 shipping, so nobody bid on them.

You know, it wouldn't have been a terrible idea to get a group of 5 like minded hackers to pool their resources together to make one uber-bid for the whole lot, split the bounty with 1 ssk each and then clean/sell the rest to recoup at least some, if not all the individual cost, right?

It still isn't.  But now I get a cut because I gave you this frankly brilliant idea.

I doubt they'll respond to any special requests given what Ray wrote and the fact that they ignored my message that I sent as soon as this thread went up.  It's likely easier for the seller logistically, moving a high volume of goods judging by their feedback, to just post all the scratched up incomplete boards as scrap altogether.

Now I'm not a smart man, but ray only posted a picture and said something about bidding high, early.

This probably wasn't directed at my idea, but it wasn't intended as 5 people contact seller separately to split the buy.  Pool money on one bidder, buy, said bidder splits and ships items after they're shipped to him (for the cost of shipping and maybe even a good dinner, of course).

No it wasn't.  I sent my message hours ago, before any replies in this thread.  11 inquiries at the moment, looks like.  And they say to ask questions before bidding!  So at least in theory they should reply.  And the shipping cost is really unknown.

All I'm hoping is this guy does not split up the keyboards into separate auctions after all the messages that have been sent.  That would ruin the potential awesome deal and cleanup project that awaits the winner.

I could drive to Auburn, Alabama for a tank of gas and most of a day, but then it would take quite a bit of work to get these things back together and salable.

My experience is that there is little market for terminal keyboards, which is half of what is there.

Lucky you. If the seller does not replace it in the auction and deliver what is advertised, then he is doing a very ugly and dishonest thing.

If somebody here wins this lot, and gets shorted an SSK, he should raise holy hell about it.

Nothing personal but that is annoying and dishonest. He should withdraw the auction and relist it! I was considering bidding on the lot based on the 5 SSK's alone. That simple action makes him a dishonest seller and if he didn't send me 5 SSK's I would file a complaint with both paypal and ebay instantly upon arrival of the boards! I might even file a dispute with paypal instantly upon payment to freeze his account so I would have the possibility of getting my money back.

This is just a lie. The seller knows what he has (he's just lazy). I bought two SSKs from him long time ago. I'm 100% sure he didn't sell you one for 100$.

Don't be so hasty to judge--the seller has 100% positive feedback with a huge amount of transactions. Moreover I also doubt he sold one of the keyboards separately, as he told me the lot would not be split up.

"Q: Did you seriously take one of the space saving keyboards out of this auction and sell it to someone else? I ask because someone online is bragging that you did. Just to let you know, those space savers are the keyboards than anyone bidding on this will be going after, and if you took one out to sell to another person (which is against eBay's rules anyway), then whoever wins this is going to be without one of the space saving keyboards."

Thanks for clearing that up.  It seems kinda weird that HarryM would brag about what seems like a lie and the seller has denied multiple times now.

The behavior of this seller is bizarre and not in his own best interest.

If he is determined to sell the lot as a whole, out of laziness, why let another SSK go "too cheap"?

It's not bizarre - have you seen his 100% positive feedback score and a high volume of transactions?  I am certain there's a method to it.  Perhaps to him, it is easier to just get rid of the broken keyboards (many look actually broken, like one case looks like someone took a bite out of it) as a bulk purchase, completely as is.  Some people don't want to deal with wishy-washy "scrap enthusiasts" who take individual parts too seriously and may end up being very picky / cause trouble.  Just look at all the PMs he's getting showered with, and one guy's already been lying publicly.

Yeah, the ssk in the top right looks like it has the biggest chunk ripped out of it lol

You may be right, but that still does not explain why he would let a perfectly good SSK go for $100, unless he is not paying attention to the current marketplace.
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

@Mod's can HarryM get a tag "nooblet" or "bit of a nob" or something along those lines? :))
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)
