Allow myself to introduce....myself
« on: Thu, 13 February 2014, 05:38:02 »
Hi,

Names Hudson, always had cheap and nasty keyboards and looking to upgrade - lets face it, have a mechanical keyboard will make a FPS master.

stumbled upon your site whilst reading a review of the Logitech k700+.

I'm in the market first for a nice mechanical keyboard, I decided that I want brown cherry switches not sure why brown though not really got anything to compare against I spose.

Very much into customising and being unique.

I'm English if you hadn't have guessed and yeah that's about it really.

Thanks

H

Welcome to GH.

My first board was a brown. It is a good place to start.
If you catch the bug, you might have 7-10 keyboards by this time next year ;)
I would not recommend Logitech though. Just my opinion. Most main stream products are not enthusiast grade.
If you are going to get wet you might as well go swimming.
Get a ducky, filco or something high grade.

I always read that reds were best for FPS and after trying most all switches. I agree. Even brown is a little gritty for FPS.

I gamed with black and I got finger fatigue.
I gamed with blue and played worse.
I gamed with brown and the grit is weird on the wasd movement.
Red is just right.

But it really does come down to what you end up liking.

The main problem that some people have here with more mainstream products like the G710+ is that it usually has some weird modifier sizing, making it very difficult to acquire a whole keycap set for it. That being said, I don't find issues with many; the QFR is one of the best-sellers, and is an excellent board with perfectly standard modifiers and good quality. I personally really like the G710+, the o-rings + browns feel very nice. However, there's a lot of extra space to the keyboards and I personally wouldn't buy a full-size, it's irritating having to move the hand so far from the keyboard to get to the mouse.

Seeing how you want customization in your board, a QFR is a great place to start. No nonstandard keys at all, and you can try the TKL form factor to see if you like it. If you want to start a bit more expensive and fancier, the Ducky TKL are nice, and the Yellow edition which I am using has nice, thick PBT caps on it as well as the best lighting settings of any board anywhere. Filcos are also excellent quality, among others. Either way, welcome and enjoy your stay!

HI Guys,

Thanks for the welcome.

Its interesting that you mention red keys, as you said I heard that they're great for FPS finger twitch.

I've never used a mechanical keyboard so I wondered how alike a cheap keyboard is in comparison - I say cheap I've always gone in at the 30/40 gbp mark so not proper budget you get the idea.

I've honestly not thought about using a small form factor keyboard, one thing that I did consider essential was media controls form the keyboard, I'm a big fps junkie and I do like a sound track to my murderous rampages and because my dear girlfriend likes to sneak in the odd one direction song into my music collections (bless her - I've threatened to shave one of her eyebrows off if she keeps it up) I need the ability o swap tracks from keyboard...  I'm guessing could use macro keys?

I spent some time yesterday looking at the gigabyte keyboard.  it has red switches (there's also a brown version available) so that may cover the options.

The biggest problem I have is I'm in the uk and there's very few keyboard specialist sites/stores/vendors - or at least I don't know where to look properly.

I'm very keen to investigate and research all avenues, but the QFR does look rather nice and being able to create my own designs/colours.. brilliant.

Everyone knows about Ducky - but my gosh they're not cheap, I hadn't heard of filco until reading here..

A bit tired now, but I will say that a lot of mechanicals, the QFR included, have media controls.

The QFR is probably the best bang for the buck.
I have seen them on ebay for for 40-50.

Well after lurking for several; days i think im going with a ducky shine 3 with whit led and brown cherry switches.

Now i seen that these boards are highly customisable, however, after reading writes on the QFR i may purchase that for my second rig... always got to have a spare, then go with a customer rattle can setup maybe a tiger stripe case not sure.

One thing that has left me thinking slight is the actual keys.

I've seen people mention type types or manufacturers of keys, i wondered what the real difference is.. when i say keys i mean caps.

Good choice on the Shine 3. I own a yellow edition Ducky shine 3, and I think its great. Now about the keycaps. There are 2 main types of plastics that are produced. You have ABS and PBT keycaps. It's mostly a preference thing, but people prefer PBT over ABS (PBT may be priced slightly higher). Different keycap manufacturers also produce the keycaps that vary in thickness.

Generally thicker keycaps are of better feel and quality, but also they are usually more expensive. Ducky's stock PBT caps are fantastic, but I believe most of their boards use their stock ABS caps, which I havent tried.

not to sound too much like an idiot but do i have to go to manufacturer for the caps?

Living in the uk i have scarce resources on the keyboard front - if my googling has anything to say about it at least.

Well no, you just go order them from popular websites, or get them from the group but sub forum located in this website.

Hi Guys me again :)

Well it seems that the ducky shine 3 is definately a winner...  I wanted to like other brands (to not look like a follow the leader type of guy) but i cant get past the shineyness of the shiney (err yup i said that)...

I digress and would like some to spend some time talking about key caps..

I now know thanks to Luis911 (high five) that there's two main type.  Is it unheard of for folks to mix these ... for example i'm a wasd gamer.. but i'm also a big mouse clicker... which most of the guys i game (in wow alike) urge me to keystroke... the issue is my current keyboard (some horrid Microsoft keyboard) i cant distinguish where i am on the board due to "function/macro keys".

What i guess im trying to say is there a key caps set out there with a different texture so i can un-sighted know that i'm going to nade rather than knife/medi pack rather that reload...

In anticipation

Thanks.
