Some sources are suspecting that the captain may have committed suicide like the SilkAir Flight 185, in 1997. (Happened to also watch Mayday on Discovery yesterday night regarding Flight 185...)

The only problem is that there were two pilots.

How about this:
A terrorist/pirate/ninja or two enters the cabin and kills the pilots.  They then disable communications and increase the plane's altitude.  They then depressurize the plane and use the pilots' oxygen supply while they wait for the passengers to pass out once their 13 minute oxygen supply runs out.  They then decrease altitude and re-pressurize the plane, changing direction and heading for their airstrip where they can then either sell the plane or turn it into a weapon.

There were two pilots on SilkAir 185 as well. According to the documentary, the Captain made up an excuse to get the other pilot to walk out, and then locked his cabin door. He then proceeded to dive the plain 80° nose down while having the black box and other flight recorder turned off ahead of time.

Your theory does seem a bit extreme... But anything's possible..

This is most likely something that will be found in a couple of years at the bottom of the ocean somewhere.

Well, as cruel as it sounds, stuff like this has to happen from time to time...
No system is fail-proof, and even at a "success rate" of 99.999% there still would be some dozen plane crashes per year.

anyone wanna be my crew?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

if it was terrorism, it's a possibility, b/c it wasn't an american airline, i can guarantee that for 50 years there will never be a successful terrorist hijacking on an american airliner. It's not the air marshalls that will take care of ****, it'll be the passengers, they will straight up murder the terrorists.

now an airplane full of malaysians? sure that's a possibility.

Just remember, that it took almost 2 years to find that Air France plane that went down. It had sunk into some underwater mountain area.
Not to say that this is the case, or to disregard any hopes, but just one of many possibilities.

They still haven't found out what happened? Oh man... I can understand that occasionally something must go wrong with the planes, but with all today's gps and stuff, you would think that they'd at least be able to figure out soon what happened, where the plane fell...

For what it's worth, I saw this on New Scientist today.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn25232-data-transmission-system-on-mh370-deliberately-disabled.html

tl;dr Someone on the plane intentionally turned off the transponders, then it turned around and assumed a new heading in one of two directions, and was never heard from again. May have run out of fuel and ditched in the ocean. Interesting how they were able to use satellite data to figure this out because even though the airline didn't subscribe to the satellite data recording system, the plane still pinged the satellite with empty packets and those pings times and locations were recorded.

At least this gives them a better idea of where they should concentrate searches for debris.

That's what I'm saying. We can locate our phones, but yet can can't find a freaking plane...

According to several news sites, family members were still able to locate phones with FindMyiPhone and Android Device Manager. Whether this is the last known location of the device, I don't really remember how apple worked. From what I remember, if the device is off, then you won't be able to find it. Unless the airplane suddenly became a submarine.

Some are also saying that the pilot altered the flight course. Or someone did at least.

Do they think they know a motive? Or who had a gripe with the pilot?
Maybe they started arguing, then fists were flying and hit buttons, and then lost.

Out in the wide open ocean there are large parts that are not covered by radar.
No phone towers and it is way too expensive and most of the time unnecessary to cover every single part of the ocean with satellites all the time.
So it is very likely that being able to call their phones is an unsubstantiated rumour. Without reception with some kind of cellphone tower you won't be able to track a phone. It just won't "ping".
If it crashed in the middle of the ocean, at 30 meters GPS and most emergency beacons won't work anymore or at least the signal won't be strong enough to be picked up above water.

Something like that has happened before and they knew exactly where to look. It still took them it still took them 2 years and a big dose of luck to find it. They even found small pieces of debris back then, something that hasn't been found with Malaysia flight MH370.

So don't be too surprised.

The supposed parts are over 2500 km away from the Western coast of Australia.

This is going to take a loooong time to find anything, even if it is the plane.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Don't forget that undersea current is strong around that area so that debris might be somewhere else when the search plane reached that area.

Latest news is that the airline has assumed that the flight went down in the Southern Indian Ocean. :(

Via Malaysia Airlines (http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/my/en/site/dark-site.html)
Quote
Monday, March 24, 10:00 PM MYT +0800 Malaysia Airlines MH370 Flight Incident - Press Briefing by Prime Minister of Malaysia

Malaysia Airlines deeply regrets that we have to assume that MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean. As you will hear in the next hour from Malaysia’s Prime Minister, new analysis of satellite data suggests the plane went down in the Southern Indian Ocean.

On behalf of all of us at Malaysia Airlines and all Malaysians, our prayers go out to all the loved ones of the 226 passengers and of our 13 friends and colleagues at this enormously painful time.

We know there are no words that we or anyone else can say which can ease your pain. We will continue to provide assistance and support to you, as we have done since MH370 first disappeared in the early hours of 8 March, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The ongoing multinational search operation will continue, as we seek answers to the questions which remain. Alongside the search for MH370, there is an intensive investigation, which we hope will also provide answers.

We would like to assure you that Malaysia Airlines will continue to give you our full support throughout the difficult weeks and months ahead.

Once again, we humbly offer our sincere thoughts, prayers and condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy.

The plane was not equipped with satellite tracking. Most planes are not. That's expensive.

They could be installed if costs were divided between the public and private sectors.

As long as there are keyboards and a couple of sets of spare keycaps, s/he could while away the time swapping keycaps over.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

As long as there are keyboards and a couple of sets of spare keycaps, s/he could while away the time swapping keycaps over.
The plane was actually secretly carrying a batch of CCs and keyboard enthusiast terrorists got wind of it

Let's be a little sensitive to Belfong. Sorry about your loss, man. This must be horrible.

I'm not so sure it's nice to joke about this. One of my coworkers is on the plane. Another coworker's immediate cousin was a steward. So, yeah, not nice.

Sincerest condolences.

I'm happy to remove my above comment if you feel it is too frivolous.

Thanks rowdy. Removal of post is not necessary. We can use this thread as a memorial. This is what we all put on the coworker's desk. He sat a few rows away.

That is a beautiful tribute.

Hope it's premature, but unfortunately given the time that has passed it might not be :(

I don't think there are 1K. A few hundreds, maybe. These are made by coworkers who drop by. They made it on the spot. We have some cranes hanging from the ceiling, over the desk. I didn't take those photo, in order to be anonymous.

Edit: grammar.

That is beautiful. I'm sure some of the comments in this thread are not comments you'd wish to hear at the moment.

I wish you, your friends, and your loved ones all the best, Belfong. It's easy to think of a tragedy like this as happening "over there," forgetting that we're an international community and that some of us have have been affected greatly.
