Rare Switches..
« on: Sun, 23 March 2014, 15:28:10 »
Hey all,

Was wondering why it is that some switch types are harder to find than others (ie Cherry MX Whites,Clears). Ive been looking for them for quite some time and cant to find anywhere that has a keyboard with them, only in some cases have I found the switches themselves. Would the best place to try and get some of these be the classified section of this website, or can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, why is it that some switches become rare and unavailable -- is it simply because they do not sell as well as others?

Thanks,

Esko997

Just clip off the inserts....

or if you don't want that, and you're opening up the switches anyways to make ergo clears, buy these pcb mount clears and then some plate mounted other switch and swap housings and then sell the pcb mounted other switch

Or if you're desoldering browns just use the browns base because it's already plate mount. I never followed the problem with that.

look up the part number, and you can often find them from the electronics distributors, onlinecomponents and the like. MX lock, superblack, and the Cherry Japan "hirose" switches are all somewhat uncommon in the 'states.

But since you didnt mention cherry specific switches in your thread title, let;s discuss some of the non-cherry MX switches taht are "rare" and how to find them.

Honeywell hall effect: these aren't really rare, but it seems like no-one has a knack for finding them. I recommend looking at the spacebar (the sealed switches can have a "bent" spacebar, whereas you have to use other methods to determine if the "dual magnet" type is HE or not), font, keycap shape, etc. Some variants are quite rare, with examples only being known from a single keyboard (clicky hall effect).

OKI gourd spring: these appear in Japanese keyboards, or Keyboards made by Japanese companies. The best option is to talk to your friends in japan, where they aren't quite so rare.

First Generation Leaf Springs. I only know of them from the Sanyo MBC1000 keyboard, and I've only seen two on eBay. Other than age, it's sometimes hard to tell exactly what generation of leaf spring is there. I recommend checking for thick sphericals and getting lucky.

---
Unfortunately, a lot of the rarer switches are hard to find as they aren't made anymore. Get familiar with vintage keyboards and switches, and you may get lucky on eBay, an e-cycler's website, or even locally!

cherry mx lock is rare. VERY rare.
Can't be that rare: there have been several group buys for them on this forum alone. They're just expensive.

That is some pretty awesome info dorkvader, that should be in the wiki!! :thumb:

Yes, there have. But now it s supply is almost empty. I have talked to cherry and they are produced on demand and the last batch was 3 years ago(they are still in production).

They are trying to get the 4000 MOQ over on DT.

That seems really cheap, when was this?

Some entrepreneur could buy 1000 @ $1.5 and sell them for $3 a switch all day long.

Some weeks ago. I am thinking about doing that. They do not sell directly so I have contacted a distributor about ordering a batch of 1000 (no answers yet).

Wow, lots of replies, thanks everyone for the info. Is there an infographic or maybe somewhere on the geekhack wiki that contains an exhaustive list of all the switches ever been produced/sold? Dorkvaders post has piqued my curiosity.

Unfortunately, even the DT wiki is not exhausive. Also, many switches have many variants (cherry, alps, hall effect all have more than 10 known). Some switches are only known from a single keyboard (superalps, clicky hall effect, most of the older univac ones)

There are several lists of interesting switches. The DT wiki of course. But also RZW's website, sandy and mousefan's pages, alps.tw, etc.

These can also be found in Copam keyboards in the West. Made in Taiwan. I once passed on buing one in Swedish layout (silly me..)

I always admired hall effect switches for their ridonculous service lifetime, but I never pursued one since I don't like linear switch typing feel.  So what's this clicky hall effect now? Oh man, never mind. Best to just forget I ever read that, since it would be impossible to ever find one.

Do you mean brown tactile Alps? (They aren’t clicky.) http://deskthority.net/wiki/Alps_SKCM_Brown

You can find these in the IBM PC Convertible 5140, of which there are a few on ebay right now.

The switches in the main section of the IBM 5140 are brown Alps, the same kind as in the last post on the page you linked to. http://deskthority.net/wiki/Alps_SKCM_Brown

The smaller-size keys used for F keys and arrows are linear, this type: http://deskthority.net/wiki/Alps_SKCL_Compact

Here’s a picture from the Deskthority wiki:

Personally I find brown Alps a bit too heavy, and prefer blue/white clicky switches, or the early orange tactile switches (the kind with long switchplate). But with a lighter spring swapped in I might like brown Alps. I'll have to try it.

Open one up. There’s a switch plate on one side and another leaf spring on the other side [unless you have some special kind that are missing those?]. They aren’t as tactile as later tactile Alps switches (the tactile bump is smoother, without a sharply defined click point, but they are also clearly not “linear”, and there is a substantial difference between brown Alps and the linear (green, yellow) switches. I believe the Alps catalog listed these as “tactile”, but you’d have to ask Daniel Beardsmore for the details.

That is, the typical kind of brown Alps switches in the IBM PC Convertible 5140 are the same kind as the ones in the link you posted.

There there were supposedly some linear complicated Alps switches with brown sliders, but those have an LED cutout and no second metal leaf. (I haven’t seen any photos of those.)

Just phoned Cherry: 4000 is the minimum, even though the smallest package is 800pcs.
:o

They pack 5 boxes into one and then sell these large 4000x packages to distributors.

The only way to order a smaller amount is to order from an end-user distributor, like Mouser etc.

Interesting, I talked to cherry and they said it was a moq of 1000.

The only person I've seen talking about MOQ of 1000 is a guy on DT who found a manufacturer making copies of the MXLOCK switch.
