Good ol' mandatory military service

On one hand, being told you must give up two years of your life to do something you may not want to do really sucks.

On the other hand, as someone who enlisted in the military late (age 25), I wish I had entered at 18 and served for a couple years, for the experience. It probably would have given me better direction and focus for my life, had I done that.

I wish I could join the military, I really could need it, but my eyes prohibits me from joining. So sad. :(
eye surgery won't help? :(

i'm on the other end of the spectrum: was quite glad that my asthma won't let me join the military.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

drafts are great for non-Americans though. The US is LESS likely to invade people when the children of its elites are on the front lines. I'm 100% for bringing back the draft in the USA, and 500% for making it compulsory that any politician who votes for a pro-war resolution MUST have his kids in the military, or have actually served in the military before.

Hoffman, 60.1% chance that Shadovved will come back brainwashed, mindless and suffering from stockholm syndrome.

39.9% chance he'll really hate Singapore's electoral monarchy and despise the sheeple who vote in monarchs.

Thanks people for the well-wishes, army food really can be better :))

Well, I'm back. Army's not good, but at least I'm only gonna be at military training for another 2 weeks before hopping off to vocational training where it'll be more like lessons ;D

I'll have to go back in on Sunday evening........and then it's another 5 days to coming out again :'(

I'm becoming fearful of Sunday evenings/nights

You'll be fine dude. You will make some good friends, some times will suck major ****, but you will have some other awesome times.

Just don't speak out for your first two years to anyone who's been in longer than you and you will be fine.

Ha, nowadays is kuniang peng, all mollycoddled, a few weeks non-combat fit BMT already kia Sunday night.

lim peh last time have to eat combat ration from can, everytime macam makan ayam brand sardine, sardine and more sardine.

Go field camp, is sardine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. After lim peh ORD, lim peh donch want eat sardine ever again. You chow lee-koot dare comprain some more.

But seriously, the worst thing about Singapore national service is not when you are in the army. It's when you are out of the army. Your job prospects go down, you have to waste time every year to train and do reservist while someone who just came to the country last year on social visit pass gets promoted over you. What you tahan in Army is not comparable with what you have to tahan later when you have to manage job, family, debts, stressful life all together.

Everyone has to start somewhere!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
