Where to get a Cherry G80-18xx?
« on: Fri, 18 July 2014, 12:07:51 »
I've been seeing these keyboards around and I love the layout. I'm not really in it for the keycaps, I'm thinking I'm going to put on my GMK Dolch set that comes in, but once I get my paycheck at the end of this month I really want to pick one up.

People who have them, where did you get yours? How much should I expect to pay? Are there USB converters for them?

Classifieds and eBay.

I bought a Dolch PAC Case and Leeku 1800 PCB out of the classifieds here. 1800 plate from a GB. And the other components like switches and diodes are from the normal places like Mouser and MK.com.

eBay and classifieds. Yes, you can convert to USB. AT --> PS2 adapter plus a PS2 --> USB adapter.

I have an 1800 PCB and case for sale right now, cheap, if you want to build your own. http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=56924.0

**** so all I would have to do is solder in my switches on that board? That's exactly what I'm looking for beside the color...how easily available are replacement cases?

If you aren't after something as fancy as others have mentioned, used lasered German 1851s are damn cheap in Germany. I'm typing on one right now and kinda like it.

I need ANSI though. Aren't those ISO?

Right. You are looking for a black one?

1) You actually wouldn't even need to solder since the 1800s are PCB mounted switches.

2) Typically people buy other 18XX boards to swap cases. I have a Dolch case because someone bought it for the keycap set only.

This wouldn't be true if he bought mine, ofc, because I have desoldered the switch bottoms.

But yeah if you buy one that's not been desoldered, you can change the stems without any soldering.

Solder them back in then!  :p

Yup, they're ISO. ANSI is less common and more expensive AFAIK. Not sure if conversion is possible. I prefer ANSI too and got used to ISO without any trouble though, but then... I rotate this with a typematrix, a matrix acess-is and an ergodox.

No I'm looking for a project!!  ;D

And yeah I'd prefer black. I think it would go better with Dolch.

Only thing I'm worried about are stabilizers. I'd buy that from you right now if I knew I could get a black (or dark) case and PCB mounted Cherry Stabs.

Maybe your project should involve painting the case  ;)

And stabilizers: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60789.0

done.

ISO to ANSI is difficult, but possible:

Dang this isn't even looking that expensive!  :D
As far as what I was thinking I mean. Any of my friends freak out over spending like more than $30 on a keyboard  :))

Do you know how easy it is to paint that case? And I feel like I should complete this job with a plate...you know if it's still possible to pick one up anywhere? How big was the GB?

I haven't painted a case before, but there is a whole sub forum dedicated to QFR mods, and case painting/plastidipping/etc info can be found there: http://geekhack.org/index.php?board=152.0

As for plates, I know calavera sold some last month but I think he's out. I don't think it would take too long to find one if you put an ad up.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a Leeku 1800? Is that a custom PCB for G80-1800's?
