Why so much love for Poker II
« on: Mon, 29 September 2014, 16:29:38 »
(HHKB fanboys aside) When talking about 60%/TKL boards, Poker II seems like everyone's favorite. The most mentioned pro of Poker II is "standardized keysizes -> easy to customize". Is there anything else? For people who don't swap custom keys often, that along does not really weighs out the lack of dedicated arrow keys.

cheaper than the other options, reasonably good quality, layout makes sense, lots of aftermarket things exist for it, programmable, PBT keycaps...

should I go on?

its cheap, and available.
also aluminum cases and standard key layout.

I'm sure there are more in depth reasons why it was the model that caught on.

customizability and you dont need dedicated arrow keys
this is coming from someone who plays Dwarf Fortress a lot(arrow key+alphanumeric based controls) on a poker who also has a TKL

F660M, Race, Pure... etc offers similar price range, programmability and quality. Seems like the only trade-offs is between standardized key sizes with arrow keys. Is that impression correct?

False Poker let's you program a full layer and make it the default.  colemak, dvorak etc.  Not quite fully programmable but close.

It's generally pretty hard to go wrong with a Poker II.

A symmetrical layout, bluetooth, fully programmable 60% that has alps or torpre is likely going to be nicer than a poker 2 but it is also going to be a custom job because it doesn't exist.

The poker seems like a good board to run until you can put together your end game board.   Unless the HHKB is your end game then you might just as easily go straight to it.   An HHKB plus a teensy and a bluetooth module could be very close to end game but at that point you can go fully custom and get precisely the board you like as you are spending a ton o' cash for a keyboard.

The amount of cases compatible with it, the price, the stock pbt, programming options, dipswitch, easy to unassembled etc.
