Modified MX Cherry Blue switches?
« on: Fri, 10 October 2014, 08:15:39 »
Hello fellow keyboard lovers,

I have a Das keyboard from late  2008 with cherry mx blue switches.

While trying out topre switches at a store today, I  noticed that the Cherry blue switches on CM storm keyboards and other brands felt stiffer and harder than those on my Das.

I asked the guy who works at the store about this, and he told me that he had tried the 2008 Das keyboard before, and he told me that the blue switches on the Das was different, more clicky and crispy than normal.

The blue switches on my Das Keyboard felt light and effortless to type on, like a brown/red switch with a click. The blue switches I tried on store needed deliberate typing to activate. I wonder if it is because my switches has worn in? But it feels the same to me as the day I got it.

I actually prefer the brown switches now, or even topre.

Oh, and I am sure that the keyboard I  tried had blue switches, not green. They had some keycaps removed and it was obvious.

Blues have the same springs as reds and browns. I think yours are just broken in on your DAS; you just didn't notice the slight change over time.
My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

MX don't feel quite as nice since ZF took over Cherry. My guess is they don't care quite as much about QA. Even still, there is some differentiation in switch from batch to batch and other factors that can make the same switch type feel different from board to board.

There's a video on YouTube testing out how each switch types sounds like, and their version of blues sounds so snappy and harder to press than mine. Yes my blues are tactile, but it's hardly noticeable.

I think this is probably it. I compared the blue switches on my Das with the brown switch of my new Ducky Zero. The brown switches are supposed to have a lighter spring / lighter actuation, but my blues did not take more effort than the browns.
The "bump" is almost gone, but the nice tactile click remains.

Okay, I just did an experiment using coins.

The "J" key on my Das keyboard required approximately 40.4g to depress, and 49.3g to actuate. This is extremely light for a blue switch. No wonder I liked my new brown switch so much.
I'm typing on the Novatouch now which has 45g keys which feels as light as broken in blue switches.

Despite being used to nasty heavy domes, I used to find MX blue quite jarring (the tactile point felt too hard and sharp), and I've not felt that way for a long time. From day to day I'd consider blue either too heavy or too light, too.

I don't have another MX blue switch keyboard to compare with, but the "jarring" feel has long gone. I guess the switches have broken in, or broken me in — I've had this keyboard nearly five years now.
